On January 6, 1848, Hristo Botev was born in Kalofer.<\/p>\n
Kalofer was the mountain town where Botev\u2019s life began. He later combined journalism and lyric poetry with direct armed action in opposition to Ottoman rule, social injustice and calls for patience. His poems gave powerful language to sacrifice, exile, freedom and rebellion, and they circulated in Bulgarian communities across the Balkans and beyond.<\/p>\n
In 1876, after the April Uprising, Botev crossed the Danube with a company of volunteers. He was determined to fight rather than merely write. He died in the Vratsa Balkan that same summer, and his death transformed him into a national martyr.
