The gathering \u2014 later remembered as the &#8220;breakfast with Mitterrand&#8221; \u2014 gave international visibility to people who were calling for glasnost, perestroika, civil rights, and political openness inside Bulgaria, at a time when the country was still firmly under the control of Todor Zhivkov and the Bulgarian Communist Party.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting mattered because it showed that dissent in Bulgaria was no longer invisible on the international stage. For the participants and for public memory afterwards, the encounter suggested that the country&#8217;s closed political world was beginning to shift. Less than a year later, Zhivkov was gone.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>January 19, 1992 \u2014 Zhelyu Zhelev Becomes Bulgaria&#8217;s First Directly Elected President<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Zhelyu Zhelev won the second round of Bulgaria&#8217;s first direct presidential election, becoming the country&#8217;s first directly elected head of state. A philosopher, dissident, and author of the influential book <em>Fascism<\/em>, Zhelev had been one of the most recognizable figures of the anti-communist opposition. His election gave the presidency democratic legitimacy under the new constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Bulgaria at the time was facing economic uncertainty, institutional reform, social tension, and a foreign-policy reorientation after decades in the Soviet bloc. Zhelev&#8217;s victory did not resolve those challenges, but it marked a clear break with the old political order and confirmed that electoral democracy was taking hold.
