The agreement opened the path toward the Treaty of San Stefano and, eventually, the restoration of Bulgarian statehood. For Bulgarians, the silencing of the guns meant the military phase was over \u2014 but what came next was uncertain. The Great Powers would soon reshape the map at the Congress of Berlin, and the borders that seemed within reach after the ceasefire would be drastically reduced.<\/p>\n<p>January 31 therefore belongs to the threshold between two kinds of struggle: the battlefield liberation that Russians and Bulgarians had fought together, and the diplomatic contest over what that liberation would actually mean. The ceasefire was not the end of the story \u2014 it was the moment the story changed.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>January 31, 1947 \u2014 The Law on the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Is Passed<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Sixth Grand National Assembly passed a law formally organizing the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences on January 31, 1947. BAS traced its origins to the Bulgarian Literary Society of 1869, making it one of the country&#8217;s oldest intellectual institutions \u2014 predating the modern Bulgarian state itself. The 1947 law placed it within the new institutional framework of post-war Bulgaria, bringing expanded resources and formal prestige alongside increased ideological scrutiny and political expectations.<\/p>\n<p>It was a complicated moment: the academy gained a stronger institutional footing while losing some of the independence that scholarly life requires. But the law also showed that Bulgaria&#8217;s new political order regarded science, history, and national scholarship as central to statehood \u2014 too important to be left to chance, and too useful to be ignored.
