February 13 carries two very different kinds of weight in Bulgaria’s history \u2014 a solemn decision about collective memory from 2003, and a maritime tragedy from 2004 that left seventeen Bulgarian families without their fathers, brothers, and sons.<\/p>\n

February 13, 2003 \u2014 Bulgaria Designates March 10 as Holocaust Day<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Council of Ministers designated March 10 as Holocaust Day in Bulgaria, marking the anniversary of the halted deportation of the first groups of Bulgarian Jews to Nazi death camps in 1943. The decision formalized remembrance of one of the most complex and morally significant episodes in Bulgarian twentieth-century history \u2014 one involving both rescue by public figures, clergy, and citizens, and the deportation and murder of Jews from Bulgarian-administered territories in wartime Macedonia and Thrace.<\/p>\n

February 13, 2003 matters because it placed the responsibility of historical memory into the state calendar, asking Bulgaria to hold together pride and grief, civic courage and complicity, in an honest act of remembrance.<\/p>\n

February 13, 2004 \u2014 The Ship Hera Sinks in the Sea of Marmara<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Bulgarian-owned, Cambodian-flagged ship Hera<\/em> sank in Turkey’s inland Sea of Marmara, killing all 21 crew members \u2014 17 Bulgarians and two Ukrainians among them. The tragedy became one of the most painful maritime disasters in recent Bulgarian memory, raising questions about ship safety, flag registration, rescue operations, and the risks faced by sailors working far from home.<\/p>\n

Maritime labour often remains invisible until disaster reveals its human cost. For the families of the crew, February 13, 2004 was not an abstract accident but a lasting wound in the history of Bulgarian seafaring.<\/p>\n
