Fifty-six years apart, two decisions on February 17 both reflect Bulgaria’s history of navigating dangerous and shifting alliances \u2014 one during the Second World War, the other in the aftermath of communist collapse.<\/p>\n

February 17, 1941 \u2014 Bulgaria and Turkiye Sign a Non-Aggression Declaration<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Bulgaria and Turkiye signed a declaration of non-aggression, good-neighbourly relations, and trade at an extremely tense moment in the Second World War. Bulgaria was under pressure from Nazi Germany, the Balkans were being pulled into the conflict, and Turkey was trying to preserve its own position amid competing diplomatic forces. For Bulgaria, relations with its southeastern neighbour were strategically crucial, with the border, the Black Sea region, and Thrace all factoring into military planning.<\/p>\n

The declaration did not remove the dangers of the period, but it helped define regional relations as Bulgaria approached accession to the Tripartite Pact the following month. February 17 belongs to the delicate diplomacy of a small state navigating a collapsing European order.<\/p>\n

February 17, 1997 \u2014 Bulgaria Decides to Seek Full NATO Membership<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Council of Ministers adopted a decision on Bulgaria’s accession to NATO as a full member. The decision came shortly after the winter crisis and marked a clear strategic orientation toward Euro-Atlantic security structures. After decades as a Warsaw Pact member, Bulgaria was redefining its defence policy, military standards, diplomatic priorities, and sense of geopolitical belonging.<\/p>\n
