Tobacco had long been one of Bulgaria&#8217;s important agricultural and industrial sectors, connecting growers, factories, traders, workers, exports, and state revenue.<\/p>\n<p>The law belonged to the wider post-war transformation in which the communist-led state took control of major parts of the economy. Nationalization was presented as modernization and social justice, but it also eliminated private ownership and placed production under central planning. For communities dependent on tobacco, the change affected work, trade, and local economic life in concrete and lasting ways.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>February 25, 1991 \u2014 Todor Zhivkov Goes on Trial<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ousted communist leader Todor Zhivkov went on trial on charges of embezzling public funds for Western cars, entertainment, and luxury apartments for relatives and favoured aides. Zhivkov had ruled Bulgaria for more than three decades, making his trial a symbolic moment in the post-1989 reckoning with the communist period.<\/p>\n<p>The case involved specific financial accusations, but the public meaning was much broader: could the new democratic state hold the former ruling elite accountable? The trial unfolded amid political uncertainty and economic hardship.
