Designed entirely by Bulgarian engineers, the plant became part of the national energy system during the socialist period, when large infrastructure projects were central to economic planning. Thermal power stations of this kind supported industry, district heating, and the general electricity supply that undergirded daily life.<\/p>\n<p>Bobovdol&#8217;s later history grew more complicated \u2014 questions of coal dependence, pollution, and energy transition eventually surrounded it \u2014 but in 1975 it represented technical confidence and industrial capability. March 27 belongs to the story of how Bulgaria powered itself through the second half of the twentieth century, with all the pride and the problems that entailed.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>March 27, 2000 \u2014 Bulgaria and Romania Sign a Danube Bridge Declaration<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On March 27, 2000, Bulgaria and Romania signed a declaration committing to the construction of a second road-and-rail bridge across the Danube at Vidin-Calafat. The Danube is simultaneously a border and a corridor, and more crossings meant easier movement of people and goods between the two countries and within the wider European network. The bridge was eventually inaugurated in June 2013, after years of planning and construction.<\/p>\n<p>What the 2000 declaration showed is that infrastructure begins long before concrete appears: it starts with political will, bilateral agreements, financing arrangements, and the decision that connection matters more than separation.
