The appointment came during the first months of restored statehood, when the country still lacked a working financial foundation \u2014 there was no stable currency, no clear rules for credit, and few institutions that citizens and merchants could yet trust.<\/p>\n<p>The arrival of a central bank was a quiet but essential step in building a sovereign Bulgaria. It laid the groundwork for an independent monetary policy and created a framework in which the state could collect revenue, extend credit, and finance public spending. Without such a backbone, the political independence won after the Liberation would have remained incomplete.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>April 4, 1904 \u2014 Strong Earthquakes Hit Kresna and Krupnik<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On April 4, 1904, two powerful tremors measuring 7.2 and 7.8 struck the area between Kresna and Krupnik in southwestern Bulgaria. More than 200 people were killed, and the destruction across the surrounding settlements made the disaster one of the most severe in the country&#8217;s modern history.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the human tragedy, the event carried lasting scientific weight.
