Ruse was a natural place for it: a Danube port, a trading city, and a gateway to Central Europe.<\/p>\n<p>A chamber of commerce helped represent business interests, support trade, provide information, and strengthen the institutional life of the economy. In a young state, economic organization mattered as much as political structure, and merchants, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs needed bodies that could speak for them and connect local activity to national policy.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>April 15, 1957 \u2014 TZUM Opens in Sofia<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On April 15, 1957, the Central Department Store, widely known as TZUM, opened in Sofia. It was Bulgaria&#8217;s largest department store and became a landmark of socialist-era central Sofia, standing near major government buildings as part of the monumental urban ensemble around the Largo.<\/p>\n<p>For many Bulgarians it was associated with shopping, display windows, scarcity, prestige, and the everyday rituals of city life. Department stores are revealing institutions, because they show how states and societies organize consumption, taste, and public space \u2014 and TZUM was commercial, architectural, social, and
