April 22 brings together two turning points: the strong victory of the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union in 1923 and Bulgaria\u2019s first trade agreement with the United States after the communist period.<\/p>\n

April 22, 1923 \u2014 General Elections Are Held<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On April 22, 1923, general elections gave the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union a commanding majority of roughly 54 percent. The result confirmed the strength of Alexander Stamboliiski\u2019s agrarian government.<\/p>\n

The vote took place in a charged atmosphere of class conflict and bitter disagreement over Bulgaria\u2019s postwar course. Agrarian rule sought to rebuild society around peasant interests, but it faced fierce opposition from traditional elites, military circles and rival parties.<\/p>\n

The confrontation did not remain inside parliament. Resistance to the agrarian government erupted in a coup only weeks later, in June 1923. The elections of April 22 should therefore be understood both as a moment of strong public support and as part of a political environment in which conflict was already intensifying.<\/p>\n

April 22, 1991 \u2014 Bulgaria Signs a Trade Agreement with the United States<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On April 22, 1991, Bulgaria signed a trade agreement with the United States. The country was taking its first steps away from central planning and towards market reform and new international partnerships.<\/p>\n

Relations with Western economies were quickly becoming important for trade, investment and technology. The agreement created a framework for economic relations at a time when Bulgaria was changing not only its markets, but also its understanding of its place in the international economy.<\/p>\n

However technical such a document might appear, in 1991 it carried real symbolic weight. The signing signalled that Bulgaria wanted to open its economy after decades inside the Soviet bloc and build partnerships in the new political environment.<\/p>\n

April 22 therefore connects two different ideas of change: an internal attempt to reorganise society and an international opening towards market relations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
