On May 1, 1859, the first Bulgarian secondary school abroad opened in Bolgrad, Bessarabia, in present-day Ukraine. The hospital became a practical expression of state-building, because public health was essential for a modern capital and administration. Over time Aleksandrovska developed into one of Bulgaria’s leading hospitals and a major base for medical education.
