On May 2, 1991, the Seventh Grand National Assembly passed the Protection of Competition Act. The law belonged to the early transition period, when Bulgaria was moving away from a centrally planned economy and building the legal foundations of market relations. Competition rules were essential because privatization, new companies, foreign investment, and price liberalization all required a framework that could limit monopolistic behaviour and unfair practices. The act was part of a wider institutional transformation that included banking reform, property restitution, commercial law, and later preparations for European integration. Although technical in appearance, competition legislation shaped daily economic life by defining how businesses could operate.
