The step came after Bulgaria declared its independence in 1908 and formed part of the country\u2019s effort to strengthen its position as a sovereign European state.<\/p>\n<p>A diplomatic network is not built through one dramatic gesture. It expands gradually through official contacts, representations and recognition of Bulgaria\u2019s place in European political life. Relations with Spain were not the most dramatic chapter in Bulgarian diplomacy, but they belonged to the longer process of establishing the country after independence.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>May 8, 1984 \u2014 Bulgarian Mountaineers Reach Everest<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On May 8, 1984, Ivan Valchev, Metodi Savov, Kiril Doskov and Nikolay Petkov reached the summit of Everest. Their achievement was part of a national Himalayan expedition that had also experienced the dramatic ascent and death of Hristo Prodanov earlier that spring.<\/p>\n<p>The climb required years of preparation, high-altitude experience and strict team discipline. It was not only a personal success for four mountaineers.
