May 12 brings together a tragic episode from the April Uprising with the later organization of Bulgarians who remained outside the borders of the free state.<\/p>\n

May 12, 1876 \u2014 Panagyurishte Is Destroyed During the April Uprising<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On May 12, 1876, Ottoman forces destroyed the town of Panagyurishte during the April Uprising. Panagyurishte was one of the uprising\u2019s central revolutionary centres, where the revolt was proclaimed and local leaders tried to organize armed resistance.<\/p>\n

The destruction of the town became part of the uprising\u2019s heavy human cost, alongside the violence in Batak, Perushtitsa and Klisura. Panagyurishte later became a powerful symbol of courage, organization and martyrdom. The town\u2019s story shows how a local community took the risk of turning a revolutionary idea into action, but also the price of that resistance.<\/p>\n

May 12, 1896 \u2014 The First Thracian Society Is Founded in Varna<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On May 12, 1896, the first of the Thracian societies was founded in Varna by the chetnik Captain Petko Voyvoda. These organizations defended the interests of Bulgarians who remained under Ottoman rule after Bulgaria\u2019s liberation in 1878.<\/p>\n

The Treaty of Berlin left many Bulgarian communities outside the Principality, turning the national question into an ongoing political and humanitarian problem. The societies gave that cause an organized form in free Bulgaria. They created an environment in which memories of home, the protection of communities and the idea of national unification could be maintained.<\/p>\n

May 12 shows how historical memory moved from armed uprising to organized public activity. Panagyurishte preserved the memory of sacrifice, while the Thracian society turned national concern into continuing civic work.<\/p>\n

In one case, memory was born from the destruction of a revolutionary centre; in the other, it was maintained through an organization of people living outside the free state. Historical loss thus became a long-term public cause.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
