May 19 brings together a heroic episode from the April Uprising and one of the most significant coups in modern Bulgarian politics.<\/p>\n

May 19, 1876 \u2014 Dryanovo Monastery Falls After Nine Days of Resistance<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On May 19, 1876, Ottoman forces captured Dryanovo Monastery after nine days of resistance during the April Uprising. The monastery became a fortified refuge for insurgents led by figures connected with the revolutionary movement in the region.<\/p>\n

The siege remains part of Bulgaria\u2019s historical memory as an example of determination under almost impossible conditions. The site combined its religious importance with the role of a fortified shelter at a time when the uprising was facing intense military pressure.<\/p>\n

May 19, 1934 \u2014 The Zveno Coup Takes Power<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On May 19, 1934, the Zveno political organization and the Military Union carried out a coup. It overthrew the existing political order, banned political parties and introduced authoritarian rule.<\/p>\n

The coup reflected the instability of interwar Bulgaria. The consequences of the wars, national disappointment and political violence had weakened parliamentary life. The new regime sought administrative centralization and modernization, while also restricting political pluralism.<\/p>\n

May 19 therefore brings together the memory of armed resistance in 1876 and the deep political crisis that shaped Bulgaria during the interwar period.<\/p>\n
