May 21 connects the beginning of the first railway project in the Bulgarian lands with Bulgaria\u2019s diplomatic contacts after the First World War.<\/p>\n

May 21, 1864 \u2014 Construction of the Ruse\u2013Varna Railway Begins<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On May 21, 1864, construction began on the railway line between Ruse and Varna, the first railway project in the Bulgarian lands. The line connected the Danube with the Black Sea and brought river and maritime trade routes together.<\/p>\n

Its strategic value was clear: goods and passengers could move more efficiently between Central Europe, the Balkans and the Black Sea world. The Ruse\u2013Varna connection shows how railways gradually changed the region\u2019s economic geography and created a more direct route between different forms of transport.<\/p>\n

May 21, 1922 \u2014 Bulgaria Establishes Diplomatic Relations with Latvia<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On May 21, 1922, Bulgaria established diplomatic relations with Latvia at legation level. The decision came after the First World War, when the map of Europe had changed dramatically and new or restored states were seeking recognition and diplomatic partners.<\/p>\n

Bulgaria was recovering from defeat and the restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Neuilly. Expanding its diplomatic contacts therefore mattered to the country\u2019s reintegration into European political life. May 21 brings together an infrastructure project from the nineteenth century and a diplomatic step in post-war Europe.<\/p>\n
