Contacts between the two neighbouring states had been interrupted several times during the turbulent decades of the Balkan Wars and the two world wars.<\/p>\n<p>The restoration took place in a divided Cold War environment. Bulgaria belonged to the socialist bloc, while Greece was aligned with the West. Despite these differences, the shared border made contact unavoidable and showed the importance of diplomacy between neighbouring states even when they belonged to different political camps.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>May 22, 1965 \u2014 A National Art Gallery Branch Opens in Alexander Nevsky Cathedral\u2019s Crypt<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On May 22, 1965, a branch of the National Art Gallery opened in the crypt of Sofia\u2019s St Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral. The crypt became an exceptional space for presenting Bulgarian religious art, especially icons.<\/p>\n<p>Showing these works in a museum setting helped preserve and study pieces that might otherwise have remained scattered or vulnerable. The setting added another layer to the exhibition: the works were displayed in a space connected with Orthodox tradition and with Sofia\u2019s architectural identity.<\/p>\n<p>May 22 therefore connects two ways of preserving relationships: diplomatic contact between neighbouring states and institutional care for artistic heritage. In both cases, institutions sustain memory and communication.<\/p>\n<p>The diplomatic episode shows how neighbouring states seek working channels of communication even in periods of political division.
