May 26 was the final day of Pope John Paul II\u2019s historic visit to Bulgaria in 2002. It remains especially important to the country\u2019s Catholic community and to the memory of religious persecution under communism.<\/p>\n

May 26, 2002 \u2014 Pope John Paul II Celebrates Mass in Plovdiv<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On May 26, 2002, more than 10,000 people attended a Mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II in Plovdiv\u2019s central square. The event formed part of his apostolic visit to Bulgaria, the first visit by a head of the Roman Catholic Church to the country.<\/p>\n

The Mass had a strong ecumenical dimension. Orthodox representatives were also present, and the pope spoke about Christian witness under persecution. The public service turned the visit from a diplomatic trip into a meeting with believers and the wider Bulgarian public.<\/p>\n

May 26, 2002 \u2014 Three Bulgarian Catholic Priests Are Beatified<\/strong><\/h2>\n

During the same Mass, Pope John Paul II beatified three Bulgarian Assumptionist priests: Kamen Vichev, Pavel Djidjov and Josaphat Shishkov. They had been executed in 1952 after a communist-era trial on charges of espionage.<\/p>\n

Their beatification honoured them as martyrs of the Catholic Church. The gesture also reached beyond the Catholic community because the pope acknowledged the suffering of Orthodox Christians and others persecuted under the same regime. The ceremony therefore connected the personal memory of the three priests with a broader conversation about religious repression and reconciliation.<\/p>\n

May 26 brought public worship and historical memory together. The Plovdiv Mass became a religious event, a sign of dialogue and an act of recognition for the victims of communist persecution.<\/p>\n

For Plovdiv, this was also a moment when the city\u2019s public space became a place of shared memory. The same ceremony brought together worship, honour for the martyrs and remembrance of people who suffered because of their faith.
