May 28 brings together a controversial social reform from the period of the agrarian government and the restoration of one of the strongest symbols of Bulgaria\u2019s revolutionary movement.<\/p>\n

May 28, 1920 \u2014 Labour Service Is Introduced<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On May 28, 1920, Bulgaria introduced labour service, one of the notable reforms associated with the government of Aleksandar Stamboliyski and the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union. The system required young people to perform organized work for the public benefit, including infrastructure and agricultural projects.<\/p>\n

Labour service emerged after the First World War, when Bulgaria faced the military restrictions of the Treaty of Neuilly and the need for reconstruction. The reform was therefore presented as a way to direct human resources towards public tasks. At the same time, it remained controversial because of its compulsory character and the state\u2019s intervention in the lives of young people.<\/p>\n

May 28, 1966 \u2014 The Restored Radetsky Steamer Is Launched<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On May 28, 1966, the restored Radetsky steamer was launched. The event revived one of the best-known symbols of Bulgaria\u2019s revolutionary movement.<\/p>\n

The original Austro-Hungarian vessel had been seized in 1876 by Hristo Botev and his band. They forced it to stop at Kozloduy before heading towards the Balkan Mountains to join the struggle against Ottoman rule. The restored vessel turned that episode into a place of historical memory.<\/p>\n
