May 31 pairs a great-power military pact with a first crack in the socialist cultural monopoly \u2014 two distant moments in Bulgaria’s history, one about security among empires, the other about the arts loosening from state control.<\/p>\n

1902 \u2014 The Russo-Bulgarian Military Convention Is Signed<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On May 31, 1902, the Russo-Bulgarian Military Convention was signed in St Petersburg. It provided for mutual military aid should Bulgaria or Russia be attacked by Austria-Hungary, Romania, or a member of the Triple Alliance. The agreement was never put into practice and had already become obsolete by 1903.<\/p>\n

Even so, it throws light on Bulgaria’s position in the years before independence. Still formally a principality under Ottoman suzerainty, the country was nonetheless pursuing its own security arrangements and regional influence, testing how far it could act as a state in its own right. Its ties to Russia were tangled with gratitude, dependence, rivalry, and disappointment, and the convention captures a government trying to work the great-power system without losing sight of national interests in a famously volatile corner of Europe.<\/p>\n

1989 \u2014 Bulgaria’s First Private Theatre Is Established<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On May 31, 1989, Bulgaria’s first private theatre was established, breaking with a cultural landscape the state had long kept firmly under its own control. It appeared in the final months before the political changes that would soon transform the country, when the rigid structures of the late socialist period were beginning to give way.<\/p>\n

The beginning was modest, but its meaning was larger than its size. A privately founded theatre showed that alternative artistic structures were possible at all, outside the official institutions that had defined cultural life for decades.
