Professor Alexander Tsankov took charge of the new cabinet, while Stamboliyski was captured and killed days later after trying to resist.<\/p>\n<p>The coup opened a period of severe political violence and polarization. It was followed by the September Uprising, waves of repression and prolonged conflict between the state, agrarian activists and communists \u2014 a decisive rupture in interwar Bulgarian democracy.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>June 9, 1948 \u2014 Bulgaria joins the World Health Organization<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Bulgaria became a member of the newly established World Health Organization. Membership tied the country into international programmes for controlling infectious diseases, improving maternal and child health, collecting comparable medical statistics and exchanging scientific knowledge across borders.<\/p>\n<p>The step created a permanent channel between Bulgarian health institutions and global public-health expertise.
