In a sector then dominated by state studios and cultural policy, it quickly became a central institution.<\/p>\n<p>The union nurtured professional exchange, debate and recognition within Bulgarian cinema. Its story reflects both the artistic achievements and the political constraints of filmmaking under communism, as well as the industry&#8217;s later shift to new financing and production models.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>June 10, 1990 \u2014 Bulgaria holds its first democratic election after communist rule<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Bulgarians voted for the Seventh Grand National Assembly in the first competitive national election after nearly forty-five years of communist government. A second round followed on June 17. The assembly was charged not only with ordinary legislation but with drafting a new democratic constitution.<\/p>\n<p>The vote drew the established socialists, the Union of Democratic Forces and other parties into an openly contested parliamentary arena. Despite disputes over the campaign and result, it lent democratic legitimacy to the transition \u2014 and the assembly went on to adopt the present Constitution in July
