Ottoman authorities crushed the movement and punished both the participants and the communities tied to it.<\/p>\n<p>Unsuccessful as it was, the revolt belongs to the chain of armed attempts that preceded the organised national revolutionary movement of the 1870s. It showed both the persistence of resistance and how hard a broad rebellion was to coordinate, reinforcing the Tarnovo region&#8217;s standing as a centre of Bulgarian national aspirations.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2013 \u2014 The New Europe Bridge Opens Between Vidin and Calafat<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On June 14, 2013, the second bridge across the Danube between Bulgaria and Romania opened between Vidin and Calafat. The combined road-and-rail crossing, widely known as Danube Bridge 2 or the New Europe Bridge, was a major European infrastructure project.<\/p>\n<p>It ended the decades in which the Ruse\u2013Giurgiu crossing was the only fixed Danube link between the neighbours, opening northwestern Bulgaria toward Central Europe and creating a fresh route for passengers and freight.
