The reform set out to widen literacy, narrow regional inequalities, and give more children the basic knowledge needed for civic and economic life.<\/p>\n<p>Turning the principle into practice depended on teachers, buildings, and local resources, but the legal commitment endured. By extending access beyond the primary grades and making the state responsible for attendance, it marked a major step toward a universal public-education system.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1971 \u2014 Football Legends Georgi Asparuhov and Nikola Kotkov Die<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On June 30, 1971, Bulgarian football stars Georgi &#8220;Gundi&#8221; Asparuhov and Nikola Kotkov were killed in a car crash near the Vitinya Pass. Both had played for Levski Sofia and the national team, and Asparuhov ranked among the most admired athletes in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Their deaths unleashed extraordinary public grief, and vast crowds gathered for the funeral despite official unease at such spontaneous mourning.
