It was built beside Via Traiana, the Roman road that connected the Danube provinces with Thrace. The remains are a reminder that the mountain valleys of central Bulgaria were once part of a busy military and commercial network.<\/p>\n<h2>A stop on Via Traiana<\/h2>\n<p>Sostra was more than an isolated fort. It functioned as a roadside station and military complex on an important route. Soldiers, merchants and travellers moved along the road, and the settlement around the fortress supported that traffic. The position made practical sense: the valley offered a passage through difficult terrain while the river provided a natural geographic guide.<\/p>\n<p>Archaeological work has revealed parts of the military camp, civilian buildings, a Christian basilica, a pottery kiln and a sanctuary connected with the Thracian Horseman. Coins, ceramics and other finds help reconstruct a place that was active for centuries and changed as the Roman world changed.<\/p>\n<h2>Reading the landscape<\/h2>\n<p>Today, Sostra is best visited with patience. The surviving walls do not have the monumental scale of a famous imperial city, but that is precisely what makes the site interesting. It shows how infrastructure worked: roads, stations, fortifications and settlements forming a chain across the province.<\/p>\n<p>The aerial perspective adds another clue. From above, the relationship between the archaeological remains, the Osam valley and the surrounding hills becomes easier to grasp. Archaeology answers some of these questions through walls, pottery and small objects rather than through written stories alone.<\/p>\n<p>The location is especially meaningful when combined with a visit to Troyan and the wider Osam valley. The modern landscape still follows the logic of the old route, and the hills help explain why this passage mattered.
