Dospat<\/strong> is one of the highest towns in Bulgaria \u2014 around 1,200 metres<\/strong> up in the Western Rhodopes, at the far western end of the range. You reach it on a road that has already passed four other reservoirs, and just before the town the view opens onto a fifth: a long strip of water following the valley between forested ridges. The town is small, the air is cool, and for most of the year it is quiet here. Nobody comes to Dospat for a single landmark \u2014 you come for the landscape itself.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reservoir<\/strong><\/td>built between 1963 and 1968 on the Dospatska river, about 19 km long and up to 3 km wide; the first stage of the Dospat – Vacha hydro cascade. Sources give its area as anywhere between 18 and 22 km².<\/td><\/tr>\n
Entry<\/strong><\/td>free – there is no ticketed attraction in the town. Fishing on the reservoir requires a permit from the operator; check current conditions locally.<\/td><\/tr>\n
When to go<\/strong><\/td>summer, for the water and the cool air; because of the altitude spring arrives late here, towards the end of April. Sunset over the reservoir is the best of it.<\/td><\/tr>\n

The reservoir that names the region<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dospat Reservoir was built between 1963 and 1968<\/strong> in the valley of the Dospatska river, immediately above the town. It runs some nineteen kilometres northwest to southeast and is up to three kilometres wide, with the road to Sarnitsa<\/a><\/strong> following its north-eastern shore. This is the first stage of the Dospat – Vacha<\/strong> hydropower cascade, which makes it rather more than a holiday lake: the water leaving here passes through a whole chain of power stations further down. Before the flooding, the valley was farmland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the shore you almost never see the whole of it \u2014 the pine forest runs right down to the edge and reveals the water in fragments between the trunks. The full strip appears only from higher up: from the pull-in before the town, or from the air, where it becomes clear how far the inlets reach back into the hills. At sunset the ridges opposite darken before the water does, and for a few minutes the reservoir stays brighter than anything around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town above the water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dospat itself is compact and almost entirely modern \u2014 the old village stayed under the water, and the town was rebuilt higher up the slope once the valley was flooded. The centre is arranged around one open square with a park area, low buildings and a great deal of sky above them; the backdrop behind the roofs is mountain rather than the next housing block. That is what sets it apart from most Bulgarian towns of this size: here the view does not end at the next street<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From above the town reads more easily. The mosque<\/strong> and its minaret are the clearest marker among the roofs \u2014 the municipality’s population is largely Bulgarian Muslim<\/strong>, and the skyline shows it. In the evening the picture inverts: the buildings disappear and only the lines of the streets remain, drawn out in lamplight across the slope, with the dark patch of the reservoir below holding no light at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fitting it into a route<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dospat is hardly ever a destination on its own \u2014 it is a junction in the Western Rhodopes<\/strong>. Seventeen kilometres along the shore is Sarnitsa<\/a><\/strong>, while eastward the road through Borino leads to Devin<\/a><\/strong> and down the Vacha<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 the same water, two stages further down the cascade. Just before the town there is a pull-in with a panoramic platform; if you are driving through and have only half an hour, that is the place to stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
