Sofia<\/strong> is one of the very few European capitals with a mountain at its doorstep. Half an hour from the city centre the boulevards give way to river gorges, reservoirs and beech forest, and above them rises Vitosha, crowned by Cherni vrah at 2292 metres. In the latest episode of the Bulgaria From Above<\/a><\/strong> mini-series, Bronicable<\/a><\/strong><\/em> takes you on a cinematic aerial journey around the capital \u2014 from the still water of Pancharevo Lake and the villages along the Iskar, up to the forests and high meadows of the mountain.<\/p>\n

Around Sofia from a Bird’s-Eye View<\/strong><\/h2>\n

From above, the countryside around Sofia<\/strong> reveals a transition that is hard to notice from the ground. The flight follows the Iskar upstream through the gorge, opens out over the reservoir, passes the rooftops and gardens of the villages, and finally climbs into the mountain. It is a change of altitude of nearly 1700 metres, covered in less than twenty kilometres.<\/p>\n

Pancharevo Lake and the Iskar Gorge<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Pancharevo Lake<\/strong> is a reservoir on the Iskar River, set between wooded slopes just southeast of the city. From the air its shape is unmistakable \u2014 a long curve of green water pressed between the hills, with the dam wall closing it at the northern end. The shoreline is lined with boathouses, rowing lanes and lakeside restaurants, and on a calm morning the surface reflects the whole gorge.<\/p>\n

Kokalyane and Pancharevo \u2014 Villages on the River<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Upstream lies Kokalyane<\/strong>, a quiet village on the Iskar surrounded by forest. The Kokalyane Monastery sits in the hills above. Downstream, the village of Pancharevo<\/strong> spreads along the water, known for its mineral springs and its role as one of Sofia’s oldest weekend escapes.<\/p>\n

Bistritsa \u2014 At the Foot of Vitosha<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Bistritsa<\/strong> lies where the plain begins to lift towards the mountain. Seen from above, it is a village of orchards, gardens and red-tiled roofs, with forest closing in behind it. Bistritsa is also known for its distinctive women’s polyphonic singing, an old local tradition that has carried the village’s name well beyond Bulgaria.<\/p>\n

Vitosha \u2014 The Mountain Above the Capital<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The journey ends over Vitosha<\/strong>, the mountain that defines Sofia’s southern horizon. Declared a protected area in 1934 \u2014 the first of its kind in the Balkans \u2014 Vitosha combines dense beech and conifer forest, open meadows, and the distinctive stone rivers of weathered boulders that run down its slopes. At the top stands Cherni vrah<\/strong>, 2292 metres, with the whole Sofia valley laid out below.<\/p>\n
