Southwestern Bulgaria<\/strong> is a place most people drive through rather than stop in. Between Rila to the east and Osogovo to the west, though, the Struma Valley holds a Roman spa town, a fourth-century fortress, a river park crossed by thirty-eight bridges, and a village where the asphalt ends and the mountain begins. In the latest episode of the Bulgaria From Above<\/a><\/strong> mini-series, Bronicable<\/a><\/strong><\/em> follows the valley from the air for a full hour without commentary.<\/p>\n

The Struma Valley from a Bird’s-Eye View<\/strong><\/h2>\n

What connects Kyustendil<\/strong>, Blagoevgrad<\/strong> and Dupnitsa<\/strong> is water \u2014 mineral springs beneath the first, mountain rivers running through the parks of the other two. Seen from above, each place reveals something the ground hides: how the Kyustendil basin closes between Osogovo and Rila, how the Struma lines its towns up along itself, and how two entirely different rivers named Bistritsa come down opposite sides of the same mountain.<\/p>\n

Kyustendil \u2014 Roman Pautalia beneath Osogovo<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Romans took Kyustendil<\/strong> in the first century AD and renamed it Pautalia, for the reason that lies underneath it: around forty thermal mineral springs, still feeding the town’s baths today. By the fourth century it was a bishopric. On the hill above stands the Hisarlaka<\/strong> fortress \u2014 the acropolis of Pautalia, built at the end of the fourth century, reused as a feudal castle under both Bulgarian kingdoms and destroyed in the fifteenth. Part of the wall has been restored, and the hill around it is a forest park. Beyond it spread the fruit orchards that gave the town its nickname, the orchard of Bulgaria.<\/p>\n

Blagoevgrad and Bachinovo Park<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Blagoevgrad<\/strong> sits directly on the Struma with Rila rising behind it, and its old quarter, Varosha, climbs the slope above the centre in cobbled lanes and nineteenth-century houses. Three kilometres out, the town gives way to Bachinovo Park<\/strong> \u2014 a strip of forest along the Blagoevgrad Bistritsa river, with an alley of about three kilometres, a lake, an aqua park and a ropes course. From the air the river is the line that holds the whole park together, and the same road climbs on towards the Bodrost resort area, the Kartala ski centre and Rila National Park.<\/p>\n

Dupnitsa and Rila Park<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Dupnitsa<\/strong> stands at the crossroads at the foot of Rila \u2014 east to the Rila Monastery, west to Kyustendil, south towards Greece. On its eastern edge lies Rila Park<\/strong>, renovated and reopened in 2010 between the ZhK and Bistritsa neighbourhoods: 280 decares, two kilometres end to end, eight kilometres of stone-paved alleys and a cycle track, 1.5 km from the town centre, closed to cars with a car park at the entrance. The Bistritsa river runs through the middle and the park crosses it thirty-eight times<\/strong> \u2014 a detail that from above reads as a long green ribbon stitched together across the water.<\/p>\n

Bistritsa Village \u2014 Where the Road Ends<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Further up the same river is the village of Bistritsa<\/strong>, on the slopes of Rila above Dupnitsa, exactly where the asphalt gives way to forest track. The Samokovishte eco-trail starts here, running past the Bistritsa waterfall and the glacial moraines, as does the long classic route over the mountain via the Ivan Vazov hut to the Rila Monastery. One clarification is worth making: the river in Rila Park and the river in Bachinovo carry the same name but are not the same water \u2014 the Dupnitsa Bistritsa<\/strong> and the Blagoevgrad Bistritsa<\/strong> flow down opposite sides of Rila and never meet. The village stands on the first of them.<\/p>\n
