Two universities &mdash; the American University in Bulgaria and South-West University &mdash; give a town of around <strong>70,000 people<\/strong> the street life of a much larger one. The <strong>American University<\/strong> building stands along one side, the <strong>drama theatre<\/strong> along another, and the red-and-white paving makes the space feel wider still. Caf&eacute;s, small restaurants and alleys strung with festoon lights run between the square and the river, and the wooded hill above is visible from <em>almost anywhere<\/em> in the centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"3584\" src=\"https:\/\/bronicable.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Places-Blagoevgrad-2.jpg\" alt=\"A pedestrian alley with arched glass kiosks and strings of lights in the centre of Blagoevgrad\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Varosha and the slope above town<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Varosha<\/strong> is the old quarter on the hillside above the centre &mdash; a preserved National Revival neighbourhood of narrow cobbled lanes and <strong>nineteenth-century<\/strong> houses, now full of small restaurants and galleries. The climb is short but the change in atmosphere is abrupt: from a broad modern square you step into a scale that has not altered in a century and a half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That alternation is what makes Blagoevgrad rewarding on foot. The town is compact enough to walk from the university centre through the old quarter and back down to the river in a single afternoon, <em>without needing a car<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A gateway into Rila<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blagoevgrad is the natural base for entering the south-western corner of Rila. About three kilometres from the centre, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bronicable.com\/en\/places-in-bulgaria\/bachinovo-park-blagoevgrad-rila\/\">Bachinovo Park<\/a><\/strong> begins along the Blagoevgrad Bistritsa river, and the same road climbs on to the Bodrost resort area, the Kartala ski centre, the Parangalitsa reserve and Rila National Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By motorway the town is around 90 km from Sofia, about an hour.
