Three kilometres from the centre of Blagoevgrad the town runs out and the lower slopes of Rila begin. Right there, along the Blagoevgrad Bistritsa river, Bachinovo Park<\/strong> stretches out \u2014 not a manicured city garden but a strip of forest with infrastructure threaded through it. The river is the line that holds the whole park together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The alley, the lake and the river<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The walking and cycling alley, known locally as the Health Alley<\/strong>, runs about three kilometres and follows the river through mature woodland. Along it sit a lake, the currently closed aqua park, a ropes course, caf\u00e9s, playgrounds and wooden benches on grassy clearings under the pines. The lake is the widest open view in the park \u2014 shallow, with ducks on the surface and a forested slope rising on the far side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The river runs fast and loud, especially in spring when the snow melts off Rila. In places the cables of the ropes course cross directly above the water, and from the path you can watch the cables span the current between the trees<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting there and when to go<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An easy walk or cycle from central Blagoevgrad along a quiet asphalt road, or a five-minute drive to the free car parks before the green areas. If you set out from town, walk the full alley to the lake rather than parking as close as possible \u2014 the first stretch, along the river under the trees, is the best part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer, and specifically summer afternoons, is the best time: the tree cover and the water keep it several degrees cooler than the town centre. Early spring has a different advantage \u2014 the trees are still bare, the river is high, and the whole slope opposite is visible<\/em>. A large part of the park is currently undergoing a major renovation under a project worth over 3 million euro<\/strong>, launched in 2026, so it’s worth checking for temporary access changes before a longer visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Onward into Rila<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The park is not an end point but a beginning. Keep going up the same road and you reach the Bodrost<\/strong> resort area and the Kartala ski centre, and beyond them the Parangalitsa biosphere reserve, the Makedonia hut and the trail network of Rila National Park<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One clarification saves confusion: the river here is the Blagoevgrad Bistritsa<\/strong>. A different river of the same name \u2014 the Dupnitsa Bistritsa<\/strong> \u2014 runs through Rila Park in Dupnitsa<\/a><\/strong>. The two come down opposite sides of Rila and never meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
