The Iskar-Panega eco-trail<\/strong> starts from a large gravel car park just outside the town of Lukovit<\/strong> in northern Bulgaria and drops straight into the bed of the Zlatna Panega<\/strong> — the Golden Panega. Three and a half kilometres between sheer limestone walls, a dozen named footbridges, pedalos, a motorboat and one cave we will get to later. The river runs calm almost the whole way, because it comes out of a karst spring rather than off the hills. The turn-off is on the right, just before the town sign, and Sofia is about an hour away on the Hemus motorway. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have been here several times over the years. The last two were in ’24<\/strong> and ’26<\/strong> — almost the same week of the year, which is starting to smell like a tradition. See you in ’28. The trail is identical: same bridges, same steps, same hand-painted sign nailed to the rock. The boat price is not. A year or two ago the ride cost 12 leva<\/strong>; now it is 12 €<\/strong> per adult. Bulgaria switched to the euro, and the price sensibly forgot to divide itself by two. Inflation does its job conscientiously, geoparks included.<\/em> \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And since we are being honest from the start: the colour of the water is a mild letdown<\/strong>. Influencer shots of an impossibly emerald river circulate online, the official page also promises emerald, and in person it is green and rather murky — depending on the light, the season, and how enthusiastically the underwater weed has taken over. The rocks, on the other hand, are entirely real, and they are what carries the landscape. Everything else is below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Panax, Panacea and Altan Panega<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before we go down to the water, a little history to set the mood. The river is called Zlatna Panega<\/strong> — the Golden Panega — and its name has at least three explanations, none of them dull. According to the Bulgarian daily Sega<\/a><\/strong> they run roughly as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One version traces the older name Panax to the Latin name of ginseng. Another ties it to Panacea, daughter of Asclepius the healer god, who cured with herbs. The third is the most down-to-earth: for a long time locals called it Altan Panega, Turkish for the golden Panega.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Which one is true, nobody will commit to. All three, though, explain why everything in this corner of the country is called Panega: the river, the village, the spring, the cement works and finally the eco-trail itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The river rises at Glava Panega<\/strong>, a karst spring in the village of the same name, some twenty kilometres upstream. Here the sources start arguing among themselves: Bulgarian Wikipedia<\/a><\/strong> calls it in one place the largest karst spring in Bulgaria<\/strong> at around 4,000 l\/s<\/strong>, and in another the second largest<\/strong> after the Devnya springs, at around 2,500 l\/s<\/strong>. Either way it is a great deal of water arriving out of the ground all at once and never drying up. That is precisely why the river is already wide and calm within its first kilometres, instead of filling gradually the way a normal river does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail sits inside the Iskar-Panega Geopark<\/strong> — the first geopark in Bulgaria<\/a><\/strong>. It joins two separate areas: the Karlukovo karst complex<\/strong>, famous for its caves, and the roadside landscape park Panega<\/strong>, where we are. The project’s motto translates as „nature is in us and we are in nature“. It reads like something written for a signboard, but it describes fairly well what happens once you go down the steps and the road noise stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lukovit is about an hour and a half from Sofia — here are more ideas for day walks around Bulgaria<\/a><\/strong> if this kind of route suits you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The car park, the signboards and the first few metres<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We start from the car park<\/a><\/strong>. It is large, gravelled, free, and on a weekend it fills up — alongside cars there are coaches<\/strong>, which gives you the second honest piece of information about your day: you will not be alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the far end there is a wooden gazebo<\/strong>, a few low timber huts and an information board reading „Lukovit eco-trail Iskar-Panega“<\/strong>. You will meet that same wording twice more along the route, as though the organisers wanted to be quite sure. More boards line the entrance alley — one belongs to the boat operator and advertises the trip on the water. There is also a souvenir stall<\/strong> under an awning, which grows a small queue around midday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From here on it is downhill — and this is where the first decision of the day lands. Two approaches<\/strong> lead from the car park to the river. One is the easy line: a few minutes of gentle descent on steps, and after that the path is flat. The other goes through the stone arch<\/strong> and is considerably rougher. The signs label them with the local sense of humour — one route is for grandmothers and grandchildren, the other for the hardy. The choice is yours, but your shoes will have an opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stone bridge and the steps down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first thing everyone sees is the arched stone bridge<\/strong>. It stands over the river looking borrowed from another century, green meadows on both banks, water underneath. This is also the shot everyone posts afterwards. Just past it comes the first wooden footbridge<\/strong> — low, wide enough for two people, with a handrail that wobbles slightly. From here it starts to smell of river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hard variant runs right through here. Steep, slippery when damp, done sitting down in places, and you will get dirty. It is not long — ten to fifteen minutes — but it is long enough to convince anyone that taking the easy approach is not an admission of weakness. The easy one is exactly what it promises: a few minutes down a flight of steps and that is it. At the bottom the two rejoin. A little to one side, nailed straight onto the rock, hangs a wooden sign bearing a single word: „ECO-TRAIL“<\/strong>. No arrow, no distance, nothing else. Classic.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the bottom the path runs beside the water with a wooden railing on the outer side. And here comes the first small pleasure: the bridges have names<\/strong>. Each one carries a little plaque. We will not give them away — half the fun is reading them one by one as you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have come with family or with older relatives, the descent at the start is the only stretch that needs any care. After it nothing is steep all the way to the far end. The path is so level that at times you forget you are inside a gorge — until you look up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The river, the rocks and the colour of the water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The path runs about a metre from the water and stays under trees almost the whole way. Branches close overhead, the riverbed opens below, and across from you rises a sheer limestone wall<\/strong>. The rock here is beyond argument — grey, layered, overhanging in places, with that unmistakable karst expression. It is the rock that makes this route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, the water. The official page promises emerald; Instagram promises the Caribbean. In person the river is green and slightly cloudy<\/strong>, with thick underwater vegetation showing as dark bands beneath the surface. In the right light and from the right angle it does catch a genuinely lovely shade — and those three or four frames are the ones doing the rounds online. The other ninety-five percent of the time it looks like an ordinary, calm lowland river. It is not ugly. It is simply not what the influencers promise.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reflections, though, are free and they work every time. With no wind the surface returns the entire forest upside down, and that is a view needing neither a filter nor any luck. Further upstream the river widens, reeds appear, and there are stretches where the water sits so still that the only sound is your own footfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is more life along the bank than you would expect. The operator’s official page lists dragonflies<\/strong>, swans, wild ducks, herons, owls and a protected pair of rock eagles — and for the dragonflies at least we can vouch personally: in June they are everywhere, in swarms, bumping into you as you walk. Swans we have never caught. Ducks, regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Footbridges, padlocks and pedalos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The path crosses the river repeatedly. The operator’s official chart counts the first bridge at 400 m<\/strong>, the second at 610 m<\/strong> and the third at 1,190 m<\/strong> cumulative from the start — and unofficially there are rather more crossings and platforms than that, because in places the path clings to the rock face and runs out over the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most photogenic is the red footbridge<\/strong>: metal, high railings, painted a colour you could not possibly miss among all that green. And, inevitably, padlocks<\/strong> have started appearing on it. Not many yet — the tradition is in its early stages here — but it has clearly taken root.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just below and above it is the pedalo<\/strong> zone — yellow, blue and red boats chained along the bank waiting for customers. On the meadow beside them stands a sign with an admirably brief message: swimming is permitted at your own risk<\/strong>. The river is not deep, but it is cold and it moves, so the sign is not wasted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boat ride and the skipper with the jokes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Besides walking, the riverbed can be covered by water. The options are a pedalo<\/strong>, a rowing boat<\/strong>, a single or double kayak<\/strong>, and a motorboat sightseeing and photo cruise<\/strong> — the last is the popular choice, because it demands no effort at all and goes the furthest. There are several routes at different prices<\/strong> — a shorter one and a longer one. The 12 €<\/strong> per adult quoted here is for the long route<\/strong>, which reaches the end of the navigable stretch. It is paid on site; there is no tariff online, so a phone call before you drive out is sensible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The water route runs about 3.5 km<\/strong> and takes 60 minutes<\/strong> give or take fifteen, according to the official chart. Along it sit the landmarks you also pass on foot: Temna Dupka<\/strong> (Dark Hole) at 1,420 m, the Spring<\/strong> at 1,470 m, the Treasure Hunters’ Cave<\/strong> at 1,900 m, the Red Wall<\/strong> at 2,060 m, a floating house<\/strong> at 3,410 m, and finally the weir and the hotel-restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real value, though, is not in the distance but in the skipper<\/strong>. Over the years we have ended up with the same man, and he runs the trip like a stand-up set. Among other things he tells you that a film was shot here, and that the production found someone mad enough to jump off the cliff for a scene — but never found a horse mad enough.<\/em> He drops it between two bends, waits for no reaction, and moves on to the next story. If you get the same skipper, the ride is worth it even if the water is murky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you ask us, the best way to order the day<\/strong> is this: we set off on foot from the car park and walk to the far end of the trail. From there we take a boat on the long route — it loops to the end of the navigable stretch and brings us back to where the trail began. That way we cover the route by bank and by water, repeat nothing, and save ourselves the walk back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Towards the end of the ride the river spreads out and starts behaving more like a lake<\/strong> than a river — wide, motionless water with rock on one side and grassy banks on the other. A complex of stone houses<\/strong> stands on the bank there. That is the turning point: beyond it you go on foot or not at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cave, the forest and the mosquitoes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Somewhere around the halfway mark the path narrows and enters thicker forest. This is its best stretch — a slim sandy avenue under closed canopy, sunlight arriving in patches, the river audible but out of sight. In places the path steps out into the open beside the rock and the sun hits you directly, so in summer a hat earns its keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also a cave<\/strong>. You can go a few metres inside and that is that — it narrows and ends. It is dull.<\/em> No formations, no chambers, nothing to justify more than three minutes and one photograph. Do not rearrange your day for it, but since you are passing, step in. The geopark’s real caves are at its other end, around Karlukovo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now the single most useful practical fact in this whole article: mosquitoes<\/strong>. Many of them. And not only mosquitoes — bugs of every description, above you and underfoot. A river, still water, dense vegetation and shade are the perfect set for them, and in June they are in peak form. Repellent before you set off<\/strong>, not after the first bites. Forget it and you will remember this route by the itching rather than by the rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail is better maintained than most in the country. The surface alternates between gravel, packed earth and timber decking; railings appear where they are needed; every few hundred metres there is a shelter<\/strong>, a bench or a table, and in places a built stone fire pit. Which means you can turn up purely to sit by the water with a picnic basket and not walk even a kilometre — a perfectly legitimate plan for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exit 2 and the way back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The trail is linear and the standard move is to walk back the way we came. At the junction, though, two exits are signposted, and they carry the same sense of humour as the approach from the car park. „Exit 2 — for grandmothers and grandchildren“<\/strong> is the easy one: it leads to the car park with a minimal climb, a minute or two and we are up. „Exit 1 — for the hardy“<\/strong> sends us back up the rough route — ten to fifteen minutes of the same steep, slippery ground, this time against gravity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The return is always quicker, because by then we have stopped stopping at every bridge. For the trail alone, without the boat, we budget two to two and a half hours<\/strong>. With the boat and one sit-down in a shelter it becomes half a day — which is exactly why tour operators sell this area as a full-day trip rather than a two-hour stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Iskar-Panega eco-trail is one of those places that asks nothing of you. It is flat, it is short, it is shaded, children get through it without complaining, and the views of the rock are quite enough on their own. If you are expecting Caribbean water, you will be disappointed. If you are expecting a calm walk along a river, a dozen named footbridges and a boat with a talkative skipper, you will be pleased. Worth it<\/strong>, and we will be back. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One more thing worth saying: this is a place that survives a repeat visit. Two years apart, same month, same route — and it still held up. The trail does not change, but the day does: once you walk it briskly and get on the boat, another time you sit in a shelter for half an hour and never reach the far end. Both versions work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is plenty nearby to round out the day. Karlukovo<\/strong> and its caves belong to the same geopark, and the easiest pairing is a quick stop at Prohodna cave<\/strong> — close by, walkable in half an hour, and the two openings in its ceiling, known as the Eyes of God, need no equipment at all to see. Clubs also run bungee jumps<\/strong> from those openings, if your day needs to be a different kind of day. The Golden Park in Lukovit itself is a few minutes away by car. Note also that Bulgarian eco-trails are a well-developed genre — almost every river gorge in the country has one, usually free, usually signposted, and usually with a picnic shelter somewhere in the middle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
