Bulgaria\u2019s Black Sea coast still has places for that kind of day: sandy shores, clear water, forest nearby and enough distance from the crowds to make time slow down. Here are ten wild and secluded beaches in Bulgaria. Bring water, shade and patience \u2014 several of them have no shops, no loungers and no shade at all. That combination of dunes, river and dense woodland is unusual on this coast and makes the beach feel like part of a larger landscape rather than a strip of sand.<\/p>\n<p>The section nearest the river mouth has bars and sunbeds in summer; walk fifteen minutes south and the crowd thins to almost nothing. Boat trips up the Kamchia through the longoz run from the same spot and are worth the detour if you want to see the reserve from the water.<\/p>\n<h3>#9 \u2014 Silistar Beach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z-XOKBpBdAY&amp;t=59s\">\u25b6 0:59<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Burgas Province, Strandzha Nature Park, near Sinemorets \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> asphalt to a car park above the bay, then a short walk down \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfd6<\/strong> protected area, seasonal facilities only<\/p>\n<p>Silistar lies between Sinemorets and Rezovo, on the last stretch of Bulgarian coast before the Turkish border. A small river runs out onto the sand, the bay is sheltered, and the forest of Strandzha comes almost down to the water. It is one of the few beaches in the country where the view inland is as green as the view out to sea.<\/p>\n<p>Because it sits inside a protected area, permanent building is restricted \u2014 what you find is seasonal at best, so bring shade, water and everything you plan to eat. The road is good, but the final descent to the sand is on foot.<\/p>\n<h3>#8 \u2014 Irakli Beach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z-XOKBpBdAY&amp;t=84s\">\u25b6 1:24<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Burgas Province, between Obzor and Emona \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> turn off the coastal road, then a dirt track and a walk \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfd6<\/strong> wild, no permanent facilities<\/p>\n<p>Irakli is one of the longest undeveloped beaches left on the Bulgarian coast, a wide arc of sand with a river mouth at one end and low hills behind. It has been at the centre of building disputes for years, which is exactly why so many people care about it staying as it is.<\/p>\n<p>There is no infrastructure and the final approach is unpaved, so a normal car will manage in dry weather but not comfortably after rain. Cape Emine, where the Balkan range meets the sea and the Kom\u2013Emine trail ends, is just to the south and makes an easy add-on to the day.<\/p>\n<h3>#7 \u2014 Ropotamo Beach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z-XOKBpBdAY&amp;t=108s\">\u25b6 1:48<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Burgas Province, at the mouth of the Ropotamo, near Primorsko \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> off the Burgas\u2013Primorsko road, then a short walk \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfd6<\/strong> inside a reserve, no facilities<\/p>\n<p>The beach sits where the Ropotamo river meets the sea, inside one of the oldest protected areas on the coast. The river estuary behind it is the real attraction: dense riverside forest, water lilies in summer and rock formations along the banks, including the much-photographed Lion\u2019s Head.<\/p>\n<p>Boat trips upriver leave from the bridge on the main road and take about half an hour. Reserve rules apply on the beach \u2014 no camping, no fires \u2014 which is part of why it has stayed as quiet as it is.<\/p>\n<h3>#6 \u2014 Vromos Beach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z-XOKBpBdAY&amp;t=130s\">\u25b6 2:10<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Burgas Province, near Chernomorets \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> short drive from Chernomorets or Sozopol \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfd6<\/strong> largely wild, dark sand<\/p>\n<p>Vromos is worth knowing about before you arrive, because the sand is dark \u2014 closer to grey-brown than gold. That colour is not natural: for decades waste from the nearby Rosen ore-processing works was carried into the bay, and it reshaped the beach entirely.<\/p>\n<p>The site has since been cleaned up and the bay is in normal use again, with cliffs at either end and far fewer people than the beaches around Sozopol. Come for the space and the setting rather than for postcard sand, and you will not be disappointed.<\/p>\n<h3>#5 \u2014 Arkutino Beach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z-XOKBpBdAY&amp;t=151s\">\u25b6 2:31<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Burgas Province, between Dyuni and Primorsko \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> directly off the coastal road, car park at the beach \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfd6<\/strong> partly organised, protected dunes behind<\/p>\n<p>Arkutino is the easiest beach on this list to reach \u2014 the road passes right by it \u2014 yet it still feels open, thanks to the wide dune belt separating the sand from everything else. Those dunes are protected, so stay on the marked paths across them.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the beach lies the Arkutino marsh, part of the Ropotamo reserve, where water lilies flower in high summer and birdwatchers come for the wetland species. It pairs naturally with Ropotamo a few kilometres down the road if you want both in one day.<\/p>\n<h3>#4 \u2014 Oasis Beach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z-XOKBpBdAY&amp;t=177s\">\u25b6 2:57<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Burgas Province, south of Lozenets \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> unpaved track, higher clearance helps \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfd6<\/strong> wild, minimal seasonal facilities<\/p>\n<p>Oasis sits on the stretch between Lozenets and Tsarevo, and the rough access road is the single reason it has stayed quiet while the resorts either side filled up. Low green hills come down to a wide sandy bay with clear water and almost nothing built on it.<\/p>\n<p>It has a long history as a free-camping spot and still attracts people who arrive with a tent and stay several days. Take everything you need with you \u2014 the nearest proper shops are back in Lozenets.<\/p>\n<h3>#3 \u2014 Bolata Beach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z-XOKBpBdAY&amp;t=198s\">\u25b6 3:18<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Dobrich Province, Kaliakra reserve, near Bulgarevo \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> asphalt from Bulgarevo, car park above the cove \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfd6<\/strong> very small beach, seasonal facilities<\/p>\n<p>Bolata is a pocket-sized cove at the mouth of a short canyon, framed by red-brown cliffs that look nothing like the rest of the Bulgarian coast. It is the only sandy bay along this otherwise sheer stretch between Kavarna and Cape Kaliakra, and the contrast of red rock, green gorge and turquoise water is why it appears in so many photographs.<\/p>\n<p>The beach is genuinely small, so in August it fills early \u2014 arrive in the morning or come outside the peak weeks. It lies within the Kaliakra reserve, on the Via Pontica migration route, which makes spring and autumn excellent for birdwatching even when the water is too cold for swimming.<\/p>\n<h3>#2 \u2014 Rusalka Beach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z-XOKBpBdAY&amp;t=223s\">\u25b6 3:43<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Dobrich Province, Taukliman bay, north of Cape Kaliakra \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> asphalt road from Kavarna \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfd6<\/strong> within a holiday village, facilities available<\/p>\n<p>Rusalka occupies Taukliman \u2014 \u201cBird Bay\u201d \u2014 a sheltered inlet on the rocky coast north of Kaliakra. The shoreline here is mostly cliff and stone, so the small sandy coves inside the bay come as a surprise, and the water is usually calmer than on the open coast.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the other beaches on this list, Rusalka comes with a holiday village attached, meaning food, drink and somewhere to sleep are all on hand. It is the compromise option \u2014 secluded by location rather than by lack of facilities.<\/p>\n<h3>#1 \u2014 Durankulak Beach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z-XOKBpBdAY&amp;t=250s\">\u25b6 4:10<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Dobrich Province, the northernmost beach in Bulgaria \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> off the E87 by Durankulak village \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfd6<\/strong> wild, dunes, very few facilities<\/p>\n<p>Durankulak is the last beach before the Romanian border: a long, wide band of sand and dunes with almost nothing built along it. Even in high summer you can walk for a while and find yourself alone, which is close to impossible further south.<\/p>\n<p>Durankulak Lake, immediately behind the dunes, is one of the most important wetlands on the Black Sea coast and a wintering ground for the rare red-breasted goose.
