Pirin is rarely seen whole. From the ground the mountain shows up in pieces \u2014 one slope above Bansko, one peak from behind a bend, one wall that appears for a few seconds as you cross the Predela saddle. From the air the pieces come together. In the latest episode of the Bulgaria From Above<\/a><\/strong> mini-series, Bronicable<\/a><\/strong><\/em> circles the northern Pirin for a full hour without commentary \u2014 from Bansko and Dobrinishte to the view from the pass.<\/p>\n

Beneath Pirin from a Bird’s-Eye View<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Razlog basin is flat, and that is what makes Pirin so imposing \u2014 the mountain does not build up gradually, it simply begins. From above that contrast is the whole picture: the open valley floor with its towns on it, and the marble wall rising behind them towards Vihren<\/strong> and 2,914 metres. The air also makes sense of the layout \u2014 Bansko and Dobrinishte on the same line at the foot of the mountain, and Predela off to the side like a door into the basin.<\/p>\n

Bansko \u2014 The Stone Town at the Foot of the Mountain<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Bansko<\/a><\/strong> grew as a town of craftsmen and traders, and that period left it a dense old centre: stone houses with thick walls, wooden verandas and high courtyard walls \u2014 architecture built as much for sleeping soundly as for living. At its heart stands the Holy Trinity church with its bell tower and clock tower, and around it the Neofit Rilski house museum and the Velyanova House. From the air this quarter is unmistakable \u2014 grey stone roofs pressed together against the sparser, newer outskirts.<\/p>\n

Pirin Above Bansko<\/strong><\/h2>\n

South of the last street the town stops abruptly and the forest starts. From there the Banderitsa and Demyanitsa ridges climb away \u2014 pine valleys carrying the roads and trails up towards the huts, the lakes and the ridgeline. From above this part of Pirin looks like an unbroken green roof cut by two valleys, with bare rock beginning where the trees give out. It is also where the mountain changes character: a resort below, a national park above.<\/p>\n

Pirin from the Predela Angle<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Predela<\/strong> is the saddle between Rila and Pirin, on the road from Simitli to Razlog \u2014 the point where the two mountains touch and the water parts in opposite directions. From this angle Pirin appears as it does nowhere else: not as a slope above a town, but as an entire northern profile standing up across the valley from Rila. From above, the saddle is the narrow link between the Razlog basin<\/a><\/strong> and the Struma valley, and the two mountains on either side of it look far closer together than they do from the road.<\/p>\n

Dobrinishte \u2014 Mineral Water and the End of the Narrow-Gauge Line<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Dobrinishte<\/strong> lies a few kilometres east of Bansko, at the same foot of the same mountain and with the same view, but at a considerably quieter pace. The town is known for its mineral springs and its open-air mineral pool, and the road towards Bezbog and the northern part of the park starts here. This is also the terminus of the Septemvri\u2013Dobrinishte railway, the only narrow-gauge line in Bulgaria \u2014 a track that climbs through the Rhodopes and ends directly beneath Pirin. From the air Dobrinishte is compact and framed by fields, with the rails running in as the last line of the route.<\/p>\n
