The weather is mild. Our stamp book for the 100 National Tourist Sites<\/a> has filled up rather nicely, and the squares still waiting are all the awkward ones. Well, we don’t leave unfinished business. A short look at the map, a little planning, and there it is: the Fotinski Waterfalls<\/a>, just outside the village of Fotinovo. It is 160 kilometres from the centre of the capital, but the road is one long ribbon of bends and takes around 3 hours, which puts the whole thing right on the edge of what a day trip can carry. A quick check shows the area has exactly one serious option for beds \u2014 Valchanova Kashta \u2014 which is also where stamp 37b lives. Fine by us: we stay the night. On the way home we can loop through Batak and Peshtera<\/a> and see something else, and Snezhanka Cave<\/a> (stamp 37) is close by too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The village<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bends, climbs, drops, and three unhurried hours later we roll into the centre of Fotinovo. The mood of the place is immediately lovely. Endless quiet, the kind that makes it an obvious candidate for a romantic escape<\/a> far from anything that beeps. It also works perfectly well for simply wandering about. The village is small, around 500 people \u2014 call it two panel blocks, or one of those big prefab towers \ud83d\ude00 There are two or three shops covering the essentials. The stamp for the 100 National Tourist Sites book is at Valchanova Kashta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are digging up the street to redo the water main. Excellent. We’re firmly in favour of villages and small towns not emptying out, and of there being life everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The start of the path is clearly marked on Google Maps<\/a>, and in parallel with that, people around here are warm enough that whoever you ask will point you the right way on the spot. The walk itself takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Heading towards the waterfalls it is a descent, and a gentle one. In late February, with a little snow on the ground, the path looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it carries on exactly like that until the final 200\u2013300 metres, where the ground drops away seriously \u2014 close to vertical. Someone has kindly put up a sign that reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THAT WAS THE EASY PART<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there are several of you and somebody struggles with walking, there is a shelter here, and even a properly stocked first-aid kit \u2014 a genuinely thoughtful touch. The spot is ideal for a picnic and a short rest before the last stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The waterfalls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Down the steep section, past signs for waterfall one and waterfalls two and three. Around 10\u201315 minutes of slightly tenser, more careful walking and we’re standing at the falls themselves. Browse the internet and you’ll find plenty of astonishing photographs of this place and just how beautiful it can be. Sadly, the end of February does not show it at its best. It’s still lovely, but we expected something else \ud83d\ude00 We’ll be back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going back, that very gentle descent on the way down now registers as a very gently annoying climb. Again, an hour to an hour and a half, and we’re back in the centre of Fotinovo. All in all 3 to 4 hours are plenty for the walk with a picnic and time for photos. The distance is roughly 3 kilometres each way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Difficulty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Low, right up to the last 200\u2013300 metres before the falls. If it’s wet, muddy or slippery, that final stretch needs real attention. There are no handrails, and one slip would send you rolling a long way down the slope. What we’d underline more, though, is that these are the Rhodopes \u2014 the same massif as Devin<\/a> \u2014 and for a visit in the winter months we strongly recommend genuinely good winter tyres and, if possible, 4\u00d74. We watched two or three cars fail to get out of the village on a road that is asphalt, yes, but also properly steep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Budget<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Low. The stamp costs nothing. Beds are the only real expense, and here the numbers have moved: in 2022 we were looking at the equivalent of roughly \u20ac10\u201320 per person in Fotinovo itself, while the village guesthouse is currently listed from about \u20ac56 a night<\/a>. Booking platforms and the property’s own rates don’t always agree, so confirm directly before you plan the weekend around a number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you’re going for the natural beauty rather than just the stamp, pick a month with more rainfall. In theory February should qualify, but clearly other factors are at work. From what we read afterwards, somewhere around May should be the better window for postcard shots, as we like to call them. There’s a lot to see in this corner of the Rhodopes, so you can combine the walk with Batak and Peshtera<\/a>, which are close, and with Snezhanka Cave. And if you simply want somewhere quiet and slow for the family, well away from screens, the place works all year round.
