For anyone based in Sofia it turns skiing into an afternoon rather than a holiday.<\/p>\n<p>The catch is reliability. Vitosha\u2019s lifts have been caught up in ownership and permit disputes for years, and which ones run in a given season is genuinely unpredictable. Check before setting off, and treat a working Vitosha as a bonus rather than a plan.<\/p>\n<h3>#9 \u2014 Dobrinishte <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PP73YH1riuE&amp;t=63s\">\u25b6 1:03<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Pirin, next door to Bansko \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfbf<\/strong> long high-mountain descent, intermediate \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> December\u2013April<\/p>\n<p>Dobrinishte\u2019s skiing is the Bezbog area, reached by a chairlift that climbs from the Gotse Delchev hut to the Bezbog hut and one of the most beautiful lake basins in Pirin. It is high, quiet and far less commercial than its famous neighbour a few kilometres down the valley.<\/p>\n<p>The town itself is the other half of the appeal: Dobrinishte sits on hot mineral springs, and the outdoor pools are open all winter. Skiing in the morning and sitting in 40-degree water in the afternoon is the correct way to use this place.<\/p>\n<h3>#8 \u2014 Malyovitsa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PP73YH1riuE&amp;t=84s\">\u25b6 1:24<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> northwestern Rila, above Govedartsi \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfbf<\/strong> small area, confident skiers and ski touring \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> January\u2013March<\/p>\n<p>Malyovitsa is a mountaineering base first and a ski resort second. This is where Bulgarian alpinism grew up \u2014 the mountain school is here \u2014 and the terrain under Malyovitsa peak attracts ski tourers and freeriders far more than piste skiers.<\/p>\n<p>The lift-served area is small and the atmosphere is chalets and soup rather than nightlife. It is also the classic starting point for the Seven Rila Lakes and for winter ascents, so bring an ice axe mentality rather than an apr\u00e8s-ski one.<\/p>\n<h3>#7 \u2014 Osogovo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PP73YH1riuE&amp;t=109s\">\u25b6 1:49<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Osogovo mountain, above Kyustendil \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfbf<\/strong> small, beginners and families \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> January\u2013March<\/p>\n<p>A modest area high on Osogovo, below Ruen peak on the border with North Macedonia, with runs through open forest and almost nobody on them. It is the sort of place where a child learns to ski without a queue behind them.<\/p>\n<p>Kyustendil below is the reason to make a weekend of it: the town has been a spa since Roman times, when it was Pautalia, and its mineral baths are a short drive from the snow. Do not expect a resort \u2014 expect a mountain with a lift.<\/p>\n<h3>#6 \u2014 Semkovo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PP73YH1riuE&amp;t=127s\">\u25b6 2:07<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> southern Rila, above Belitsa \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfbf<\/strong> small, beginner and intermediate \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> January\u2013March<\/p>\n<p>Semkovo is a quiet cluster of hotels in pine forest at around 1,750 metres, built as a holiday base rather than a resort and still feeling like one. Snow lies well at that altitude and the runs suit families who want space more than variety.<\/p>\n<p>The other reason to come is nearby: the Dancing Bears Park above Belitsa, a sanctuary for bears rescued from street performing, which is open to visitors in the warmer months. In winter Semkovo is simply a very calm place to be in the mountains.<\/p>\n<h3>#5 \u2014 Ribaritsa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PP73YH1riuE&amp;t=152s\">\u25b6 2:32<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Stara Planina, near Teteven \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfbf<\/strong> beginner slopes only \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> January\u2013February, snow permitting<\/p>\n<p>Be clear about what Ribaritsa is: a beautiful mountain village strung along a river valley, with a couple of small drag lifts rather than a ski area. If you arrive expecting pistes you will be disappointed; if you arrive expecting a winter weekend in the woods, it delivers.<\/p>\n<p>Its real season is the rest of the year \u2014 guesthouses, walking, the Teteven Balkan and the road over to the Vit valley. As a snow destination it works for first turns, sledging and a fire in the evening, and that is all it claims.<\/p>\n<h3>#4 \u2014 Kartala <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PP73YH1riuE&amp;t=171s\">\u25b6 2:51<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> western Rila, above Blagoevgrad \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfbf<\/strong> intermediate and off-piste terrain \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> January\u2013March<\/p>\n<p>Kartala has the terrain and the altitude for a serious resort, with wide views over the Struma valley towards Pirin, and it draws freeriders when conditions are good. It also has the most complicated recent history of anything on this list.<\/p>\n<p>Lift operation here has been interrupted repeatedly by financing and legal problems, and the resort has spent whole seasons closed. Before planning a trip, confirm what is actually running \u2014 the mountain is worth it, but the infrastructure has not been dependable.<\/p>\n<h3>#3 \u2014 Pamporovo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PP73YH1riuE&amp;t=197s\">\u25b6 3:17<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> the Rhodopes, near Smolyan \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfbf<\/strong> around 37 km, the best beginner resort in Bulgaria \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> late December\u2013March<\/p>\n<p>Pamporovo is the sunny one. Its wide, gentle runs through spruce forest make it the standard recommendation for beginners and families, and the ski school tradition here is long. The trade-off is altitude: at roughly 1,650 metres the season is shorter and warmer than in Rila or Pirin.<\/p>\n<p>Snezhanka peak above the resort carries a television tower with a viewing platform, and on a clear day the panorama reaches the Rhodope ridges in every direction. The Rhodope villages, caves and the Trigrad gorge are all within a day\u2019s drive when you want a break from the snow.<\/p>\n<h3>#2 \u2014 Borovets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PP73YH1riuE&amp;t=222s\">\u25b6 3:42<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> northern Rila, an hour from Sofia \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfbf<\/strong> around 58 km, all levels \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> December\u2013April<\/p>\n<p>Borovets is the oldest mountain resort in Bulgaria, founded in the late 19th century as a royal hunting base, and it is still the closest full resort to Sofia \u2014 which makes it the easy choice for a short trip. The Yastrebets gondola serves the main ski area, with long tree-lined runs back down to the village.<\/p>\n<p>Above it stands Musala, at 2,925 metres the highest peak in the Balkan peninsula, climbed from here in summer. The resort centre is compact and busy in the evening, and transfers from Sofia airport are short enough to ski on arrival day.<\/p>\n<h3>#1 \u2014 Bansko <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PP73YH1riuE&amp;t=247s\">\u25b6 4:07<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Pirin, southwestern Bulgaria \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfbf<\/strong> the largest ski area in the country, all levels \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> December\u2013April, the longest season<\/p>\n<p>Bansko has the best snow record, the most modern lift system and the longest descent in Bulgaria \u2014 the run from the Todorka area down to the gondola station covers a serious vertical drop. It has hosted World Cup races, which tells you what the upper pistes are like when they are prepared.<\/p>\n<p>Its one weakness is the gondola queue on peak-season mornings; going up early or staying at the Banderishka Polyana mid-station side avoids the worst of it. Off the mountain, Bansko is two towns in one \u2014 the modern hotel zone, and an old quarter of stone Revival houses and mehanas where the kapama comes out of a clay pot.
