You may set out looking for Roman ruins and end up in a small gallery, a quiet courtyard or a caf\u00e9 in Kapana. Ancient history, modern culture and beautiful architecture are unusually close together here. In this guide, I am highlighting ten places that make Plovdiv memorable. Leave a little space between the stops. Plovdiv has a way of filling that space for you. Almost everything below is within walking distance of the centre \u2014 the two exceptions are the hills, and those are worth the climb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Before the list, watch the short Plovdiv video:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Top 10 Places to Visit in Plovdiv, Bulgaria | Explore the Best Tourist Attractions\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/llGkZIokQ5k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>#10 \u2014 Ancient Stadium <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=llGkZIokQ5k&amp;t=41s\">\u25b6 0:41<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Dzhumaya Square, on the main pedestrian street \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> free from above, small charge for the underground level \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> 15 minutes<\/p>\n<p>What you see at Dzhumaya Square is only the curved northern end of a stadium that ran for around 240 metres beneath what is now the main shopping street. It was built in the 2nd century AD, modelled on the stadium at Delphi, and held tens of thousands of spectators \u2014 the largest building of Roman Philippopolis by a wide margin.<\/p>\n<p>It hosted athletic games, including the Pythian Games that the city was granted the right to hold; chariot racing needed a circus and took place elsewhere. Most of the structure remains buried under the modern street, which is why the small surviving section is such a strange, sunken surprise in the middle of a shopping crowd.<\/p>\n<h3>#9 \u2014 Ethnographic Museum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=llGkZIokQ5k&amp;t=63s\">\u25b6 1:03<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Old Town, Doctor Stoyan Chomakov street \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> ticketed \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> 45 minutes<\/p>\n<p>The building is the reason to go even before the collection. The museum occupies the Kuyumdzhioglu House, built in 1847 for a wealthy merchant, and its dark blue fa\u00e7ade with a rippling baroque gable is the single most photographed house in Plovdiv.<\/p>\n<p>Inside are costumes, tools, instruments and workshop equipment from the Rhodope and Thracian plain communities, arranged room by room across two floors of carved ceilings. Allow a few minutes for the walled garden, which is a good place to sit after the climb up the cobbles.<\/p>\n<h3>#8 \u2014 Singing Fountains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=llGkZIokQ5k&amp;t=84s\">\u25b6 1:24<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Tsar Simeon\u2019s Garden \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> free \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> the show runs about 40 minutes<\/p>\n<p>The fountains perform on summer evenings, with water, light and music over the lake in Tsar Simeon\u2019s Garden. The show is genuinely popular with locals rather than a tourist set-piece \u2014 families arrive early for the benches on the sloped seating.<\/p>\n<p>The park itself is worth knowing about: it was laid out in the 1890s by the Swiss gardener Lucien Chevalas, who also designed several other Bulgarian city parks, and it still follows his plan. Check the schedule before you go, since the fountains do not run year-round or every night.<\/p>\n<h3>#7 \u2014 Nebet Tepe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=llGkZIokQ5k&amp;t=105s\">\u25b6 1:45<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> the top of the Old Town \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> free, open at all hours \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> 30 minutes, more at sunset<\/p>\n<p>Nebet Tepe is where Plovdiv began. This is the oldest inhabited spot in the city \u2014 the Thracian settlement of Eumolpia stood on this hill long before Philip II arrived \u2014 and successive walls from Thracian, Hellenistic, Roman and medieval periods are stacked on the same rock.<\/p>\n<p>The ruins are open and unfenced, which makes it the standard place to watch the sun go down over the plain, with the Rhodopes on one side and the city grid on the other. Go up in the evening, take something to drink, and expect company.<\/p>\n<h3>#6 \u2014 Hisar Kapiya <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=llGkZIokQ5k&amp;t=121s\">\u25b6 2:01<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Old Town, between the Balabanov and Hindliyan houses \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> free, part of the street \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> a few minutes<\/p>\n<p>The eastern gate of the fortified old city, standing on Roman foundations and rebuilt in the medieval period, Hisar Kapiya is a working part of the Old Town rather than a monument \u2014 the lane still passes through it and houses lean over it on both sides.<\/p>\n<p>It is also the most photographed corner in the quarter, so come early if you want it without people. From here it is a two-minute walk in either direction to the Balabanov House and the Hindliyan House, both open as museums and both worth the entry.<\/p>\n<h3>#5 \u2014 Alyosha Monument <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=llGkZIokQ5k&amp;t=139s\">\u25b6 2:19<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Bunardzhik hill \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> free \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> an hour with the walk up<\/p>\n<p>The eleven-metre figure of a Soviet soldier has stood on Bunardzhik since 1957, commemorating the Soviet Army\u2019s entry into Bulgaria in 1944. It remains a genuinely contested monument: there have been repeated attempts to remove it and equally determined campaigns to keep it, and opinions in the city are divided along lines that predate any of the current visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever you make of the politics, the hill is one of the best viewpoints in Plovdiv \u2014 a steep walk up through pine woods with the whole plain visible from the top. Bunardzhik is one of the six surviving hills of a city that originally had seven; one was quarried away for paving stones.<\/p>\n<h3>#4 \u2014 Regional Historical Museum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=llGkZIokQ5k&amp;t=160s\">\u25b6 2:40<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> four separate buildings across the centre \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> ticketed per branch \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> an hour per branch<\/p>\n<p>This is not one museum but four, and knowing which you want saves an afternoon. The main exhibition covers the Unification of Bulgaria in 1885 and occupies the handsome former regional assembly building on Saedinenie Square, where the event itself was proclaimed.<\/p>\n<p>The other branches are the Bulgarian Revival museum in the Georgiadi House, the museum of book publishing in the Hristo G. Danov House, and the modern history collection. If you only do one, make it the Unification building \u2014 the story is Plovdiv\u2019s own, and it explains why the city thinks of itself the way it does.<\/p>\n<h3>#3 \u2014 The Ancient Theatre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=llGkZIokQ5k&amp;t=179s\">\u25b6 2:59<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> between the two hills of the Old Town \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> ticketed, free view from the railing above \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> 30 minutes<\/p>\n<p>It is usually called an amphitheatre and it is not one \u2014 an amphitheatre is a full oval for combat spectacles, while this is a semicircular Roman theatre for performances and assemblies. Built in the 1st century AD, it seated several thousand and served as the meeting place of the provincial assembly of Thrace.<\/p>\n<p>The theatre lay buried until landslides in the 1970s exposed it, and the restoration was complete enough that it is used again for opera, concerts and the autumn festival season. Check what is on: sitting in a Roman theatre for an evening performance, with the Rhodopes behind the stage, is a different experience from looking at it in daylight.<\/p>\n<h3>#2 \u2014 Kapana District <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=llGkZIokQ5k&amp;t=200s\">\u25b6 3:20<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> just north of the main street \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> free \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> an evening<\/p>\n<p>Kapana means \u201cthe trap\u201d, a name earned by its grid of narrow lanes, and it was the craft and trade quarter of the Ottoman-era city. It had fallen quiet by the 2000s, and its revival as a creative district \u2014 studios, galleries, small bars \u2014 was the most visible part of Plovdiv\u2019s run-up to European Capital of Culture in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The result is one of the few genuinely lively pedestrian quarters in Bulgaria, small enough to cross in five minutes and dense enough to spend a whole evening in. Visit twice, in daylight and after dark; the mood changes completely.<\/p>\n<h3>#1 \u2014 Old Town <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=llGkZIokQ5k&amp;t=220s\">\u25b6 3:40<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> the Three Hills, above the centre \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> free to walk, houses ticketed individually \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> half a day<\/p>\n<p>The Old Town is an architectural reserve rather than a neighbourhood of attractions, and half the places on this list are inside it. The tall merchant houses date from the 19th-century National Revival, with upper floors that project further out with every storey and interiors painted with landscapes their owners had usually never seen.<\/p>\n<p>Wear proper shoes \u2014 the cobbles are steep and slippery when wet \u2014 and pick two or three houses rather than trying to enter all of them. Then let the lanes take you where they want.
