A city break here might mean Roman ruins, a mountain park, a Black Sea garden or a quiet street where the best thing to do is sit down for coffee. These ten cities are a useful starting point. Others are less talked about, which is exactly why they are worth considering. A cable car runs from a residential district straight up to the plateau \u2014 an unusual convenience that saves a long climb.<\/p>\n<p>The Old Elm in the centre is around 1,000 years old and serves as the city&#8217;s emblem. The Hadzhi Dimitar Museum House and the National Textile Museum tell Sliven&#8217;s other story: it was Bulgaria&#8217;s first industrial city.<\/p>\n<h3>#9 \u2014 Shumen<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Northeastern Bulgaria \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> about 380 km from Sofia \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> one to two days \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3So2gFyQnnY&amp;t=62s\">\u25b6 1:02<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shumen is the best base for exploring early Bulgarian history. The Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria stands on the plateau above the city and is one of the most striking examples of concrete monumental architecture in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The Tombul Mosque is the largest in Bulgaria and remains in active use. The Madara Rider, Pliska and Preslav all lie within 30 km, which makes Shumen a starting point for two full days.<\/p>\n<p><em>\ud83c\udfa5 See the Madara Rider from above in our one-hour 4K film, <a href=\"https:\/\/bronicable.com\/en\/from-above\/from-above-bulgaria-stone-wonders\/\">Stone Wonders<\/a> \u2192<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>#8 \u2014 Yambol<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Southeastern Bulgaria \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> about 300 km from Sofia \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> half a day \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3So2gFyQnnY&amp;t=84s\">\u25b6 1:24<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Bezisten in the centre of Yambol is a covered Ottoman market from the 15th century \u2014 one of the few surviving in the Balkans and the only one in Bulgaria still functioning as commercial space.<\/p>\n<p>The ancient city of Kabile lies 10 km north and is among the most significant Thracian and Roman settlements in the region. The excavations are open to visitors and take an hour or two.<\/p>\n<h3>#7 \u2014 Razgrad<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Northeastern Bulgaria \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> about 350 km from Sofia \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> one day \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3So2gFyQnnY&amp;t=106s\">\u25b6 1:46<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abritus is a Roman city within Razgrad itself, with excavated streets, fortress walls and finds including the largest Roman-era gold hoard ever discovered in Bulgaria. The archaeological park sits inside the city limits.<\/p>\n<p>The Sboryanovo reserve is about 40 km away and holds the Sveshtari Thracian Tomb, a UNESCO site with carved female figures found in no other Thracian tomb. The Ibrahim Pasha Mosque in the centre is among the largest in the Balkans.<\/p>\n<h3>#6 \u2014 Pleven<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Northern Bulgaria \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> about 170 km from Sofia \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> one day \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3So2gFyQnnY&amp;t=126s\">\u25b6 2:06<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Pleven Panorama, depicting the 1877 siege of the city, is the main reason to come \u2014 a circular canvas over 100 metres long. Few such panoramas exist anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylaka Park is a few kilometres from the centre, built inside a former stone quarry, with rock walls and a lake. It is where the day slows down after the museums.<\/p>\n<h3>#5 \u2014 Stara Zagora<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Central Bulgaria \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> about 230 km from Sofia \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> one day \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3So2gFyQnnY&amp;t=149s\">\u25b6 2:29<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Neolithic Dwellings Museum preserves the best-surviving Neolithic houses in Europe \u2014 roughly 8,000 years old, with walls and interior fittings still intact. That alone justifies the city&#8217;s place on this list.<\/p>\n<p>Augusta Traiana is the Roman forum in the centre, excavated between modern buildings. The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, a UNESCO site, is 35 km away and fits into the same day.<\/p>\n<h3>#4 \u2014 Burgas<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Black Sea coast \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> about 380 km from Sofia \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> one to two days \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3So2gFyQnnY&amp;t=173s\">\u25b6 2:53<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Sea Garden stretches for kilometres along the shore and functions as the city&#8217;s main public space. Burgas is calmer than Varna and works well as a base rather than just a stop.<\/p>\n<p>The Burgas lakes nearby form one of the most important birdwatching areas in Europe \u2014 Atanasovsko and Pomorie are saltwater, and pelicans and storks pass through in autumn along the Via Pontica flyway. That alone justifies the journey.<\/p>\n<p>The Roman Baths are the fourth largest in Europe and stand in the centre of town. Golden Sands and Albena are close by, while Aladzha Monastery and Pobiti Kamani make Varna a base for several different days.<\/p>\n<h3>#2 \u2014 Plovdiv<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Central Bulgaria \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> about 150 km from Sofia \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> two days \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3So2gFyQnnY&amp;t=219s\">\u25b6 3:39<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Plovdiv is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, with over 6,000 years of settlement. The 2nd-century Roman theatre still operates as a working stage, hosting opera and concerts through the summer.<\/p>\n<p>The Old Town is made up of Revival-era houses along cobbled streets, while Kapana is the district of caf\u00e9s and galleries. At one intersection stand an Orthodox cathedral, a mosque, a synagogue and a Catholic church.<\/p>\n<p>Vitosha begins where the city ends and is reachable by public transport \u2014 few capitals offer a 2,200-metre summit within a single afternoon.
