Ancient buildings stand beside busy cafés, a quiet park can be a few minutes from a lively boulevard, and the mountain is always somewhere in the background. This guide gathers ten places that show different sides of the Bulgarian capital. If you want to see how Sofia fits into the wider country, our guide to Bulgaria’s cities is a useful next stop.

You do not need to hurry through Sofia. The centre is walkable, and some of the best moments happen between the famous landmarks. One thing to know before you plan: everything below is in the centre except the National Museum of History, which sits at the foot of Vitosha and needs its own half-day.

Before the list, watch the Sofia video:

#10 — Saint George Rotunda ▶ 0:37

📍 courtyard of the Presidency, city centre · 🎟 free · ⏱ 20 minutes

The red-brick rotunda is the oldest building in Sofia, put up in the 4th century when the city was Roman Serdica. It is easy to miss, because it stands in a courtyard enclosed by the Presidency and a hotel — you walk in through an archway from the street and the fourth century is simply there.

Inside, restorers uncovered several layers of painting on top of one another, from early Christian decoration through medieval frescoes, including a ring of angel faces in the dome. It is still a working church. Around it lie the excavated streets of Serdica, which continue underground into the metro station next door.

#9 — National Gallery ▶ 1:00

📍 several buildings; the main one is Kvadrat 500 · 🎟 ticketed per building · ⏱ two hours

The National Gallery is not one address. Its principal venue, Kvadrat 500, holds the main survey of Bulgarian art from the Revival period to the present, arranged so you can walk the whole century in an afternoon. That is the one to choose if you have time for a single visit.

The former Royal Palace on Battenberg Square holds another part of the collection and shares the building with the National Ethnographic Museum, so the two can be done together. Add the crypt of Alexander Nevsky, which is also part of the gallery, and you have the country’s icon collection as well.

#8 — Military Academy Park ▶ 1:24

📍 beside the Rakovski Military Academy · 🎟 free · ⏱ 20 minutes

This is a small, well-kept green square rather than a destination, with paths, benches and busts of Bulgarian military figures under mature trees. Nobody travels to Sofia for it, and that is rather the point.

It works as a pause between other things — a place to sit with a coffee when you have had enough of boulevards, a few minutes from Borisova Gradina and the museums on the eastern side of the centre. Sofia has a lot of these small parks, and using them is how the city is meant to be walked.

#7 — National Museum of Military History ▶ 1:46

📍 Cherkovna street, eastern centre · 🎟 ticketed · ⏱ two hours

The indoor collection runs from medieval arms to the two world wars, but the reason people come is outside. The open-air park behind the building is filled with hardware — MiG fighters, helicopters, tanks, artillery and Soviet-era missile systems — laid out on grass where you can walk right up to them.

For anyone with an interest in Cold War equipment it is one of the strongest collections in the region, and it is unusually good with children, who are allowed to get close to machines that are behind ropes elsewhere. Allow more time than you think for the outdoor section.

#6 — Borisova Gradina ▶ 2:10

📍 east of the centre, along Tsarigradsko shose · 🎟 free · ⏱ as long as you like

Sofia’s oldest park was begun in the 1880s by a Swiss gardener, Daniel Neff, and expanded by his successors over the following decades — which is why the older section feels designed rather than landscaped, with formal avenues opening onto lakes.

It holds the Ariana lake, which becomes an ice rink in winter, the Vasil Levski national stadium, an observatory and a number of monuments from very different eras. It is where Sofia actually goes: runners, dog walkers, chess players and, on summer evenings, most of the city.

#5 — National Museum of History ▶ 2:29

📍 Boyana, at the foot of Vitosha · 🎟 ticketed · ⏱ half a day including the journey

Be clear about the location: this is not the “beautiful mansion in the centre” it is sometimes described as. The museum occupies a former government residence in Boyana, on the edge of the city, and needs a bus or a taxi. Plan it as a trip rather than a stop.

What is there justifies the journey — the Panagyurishte gold treasure, Thracian material, medieval collections and a good section on the twentieth century. Combine it with Boyana Church, a UNESCO site with 13th-century frescoes, which is a short walk away and takes small groups for a few minutes at a time.

#4 — Slaveykov Square ▶ 2:54

📍 central Sofia, off Graf Ignatiev street · 🎟 free · ⏱ half an hour

Slaveykov Square is Sofia’s book market. Stalls fill the square every day, selling new and second-hand books, and it has been the city’s literary meeting point for decades — the place to find an out-of-print Bulgarian title or an old Cyrillic edition of something you already own.

In the middle sits a bronze bench with the two Slaveykovs, father and son, both poets, whom the square is named after; sitting between them is the standard photograph. The cafés around the edge are where people read what they have just bought.

#3 — National Palace of Culture ▶ 3:18

📍 southern end of Vitosha Boulevard · 🎟 free outside, ticketed events inside · ⏱ an hour with the park

Known to everyone as NDK, the palace was completed in 1981 for the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state and remains the largest congress centre in southeastern Europe. Its enormous concrete geometry is a monument to a very particular moment in the country’s architecture.

The park and fountains in front are the real public space — skateboarders, concerts, markets and, at the far end, the site of the crumbling 1300 Years of Bulgaria monument that was finally taken down after years of argument. Walk up from Vitosha Boulevard and the whole thing lines up in front of you.

#2 — Alexander Nevsky Cathedral ▶ 3:41

📍 Alexander Nevsky Square · 🎟 free; crypt and photography charged · ⏱ an hour with the crypt

The cathedral was built between the 1880s and 1912 to a design by the Russian architect Alexander Pomerantsev, as a memorial to the soldiers who died in the war that liberated Bulgaria in 1877–78. Its gold-leaf dome is the image most people carry away from Sofia.

Do not skip the crypt. It holds one of the finest collections of Orthodox icons anywhere, part of the National Gallery, spanning from the medieval period onwards. The square around the cathedral also has a small antiques and Soviet-memorabilia market most days.

#1 — Vitosha Boulevard ▶ 4:07

📍 from Sveta Nedelya Square to NDK · 🎟 free · ⏱ an evening

Vitoshka, as everyone calls it, is the main pedestrian street and the spine of the centre: cafés with terraces, shops from boutiques to chains, and a constant flow of people between the cathedral end of town and NDK.

Its best feature is accidental. Walk south and the street frames Vitosha mountain directly ahead, snow-covered for much of the year — a reminder that a two-thousand-metre summit is inside the city limits. Sit outside with a coffee, look up the street, and you have the clearest single view of what Sofia is.

If you want to continue exploring after the capital, our historical sites guide is a natural next read.

The ten places from the video — where each one is, what it costs and how long to allow, including which one is not in the centre.

[2

post-669","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-bulgaria","latest_post
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.3 -
