The roads become quieter, old houses hold on to their details, and a walk can end with homemade food instead of a crowded attraction. These ten villages offer traditional architecture, mountain scenery, crafts and important history. Some are best for architecture, others for hiking, ruins or simply a slower afternoon. It is honest to say that it is now a holiday village rather than a working one \u2014 there are very few permanent residents.<\/p>\n<p>That does not make it less pleasant, but it does change what to expect. Kovachevitsa, three kilometres away, is the larger and more famous architectural reserve and the two are usually visited together, with the Ognyanovo hot springs a short drive down the valley.<\/p>\n<h3>#9 \u2014 Stob <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xCQE5t2KWts&amp;t=54s\">\u25b6 0:54<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> western Rila, near the town of Rila \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> off the main Sofia\u2013Blagoevgrad road \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfdb<\/strong> the earth pyramids above the village<\/p>\n<p>The reason to stop at Stob is on the slope behind it. The Stob Pyramids are tall sandstone columns eroded into cones and towers, many capped with a stone that shelters the softer material beneath, and a marked path from the village church climbs up into them in about half an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Local legend says they are a wedding party turned to stone, which is a story attached to several such formations in the Balkans. Go in the late afternoon when the rock turns orange, and combine it with Rila Monastery, which is up the same valley.<\/p>\n<h3>#8 \u2014 Zheravna <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xCQE5t2KWts&amp;t=81s\">\u25b6 1:21<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> eastern Balkan range, near Kotel \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> asphalt, cars left at the edge of the village \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfdb<\/strong> architectural reserve of wooden Revival houses<\/p>\n<p>Zheravna is one of the most complete Revival villages in the country \u2014 hundreds of protected wooden houses on stone bases, cobbled lanes and gates that have not changed shape in two centuries. The writer Yordan Yovkov was born here and his house is open as a museum.<\/p>\n<p>In August the fields nearby host the Festival of Folklore Costume, where modern clothing and phones are not allowed on the grounds; it is either the most atmospheric or the most peculiar event in the Bulgarian calendar, depending on your taste. Kotel, with its carpet-weaving tradition, is a short drive away.<\/p>\n<h3>#7 \u2014 Zlatna Panega <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xCQE5t2KWts&amp;t=108s\">\u25b6 1:48<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Lovech province, near Yablanitsa \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> just off the Sofia\u2013Varna route \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfdb<\/strong> one of Bulgaria\u2019s largest karst springs<\/p>\n<p>The attraction here is the source of the river: water emerges from the rock in enormous volume at the edge of the village, one of the biggest karst springs in the country, feeding pools of a striking blue-green colour. An eco trail follows the water through the gorge and takes about an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Be realistic about the rest \u2014 the village also has a large cement works and is not a picture-postcard settlement. Come for the spring and the trail, ideally as a break on the drive between Sofia and the Danube plain rather than as a destination in itself.<\/p>\n<h3>#6 \u2014 Bozhentsi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xCQE5t2KWts&amp;t=128s\">\u25b6 2:08<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Central Balkan range, near Gabrovo \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> short drive from Gabrovo or Tryavna \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfdb<\/strong> architectural-historical reserve<\/p>\n<p>Bozhentsi is protected to a degree that no new building may alter its appearance, which is why the whole village reads as a single period piece: heavy stone-slab roofs, whitewashed upper floors and gardens spilling over dry-stone walls.<\/p>\n<p>Several houses are open as museums, and the village is small enough to walk in an hour and pleasant enough to stay in for a night. It sits in the same corner of the country as the Etar open-air museum and Tryavna\u2019s woodcarving quarter, which together make an excellent two-day loop.<\/p>\n<h3>#5 \u2014 Shiroka Laka <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xCQE5t2KWts&amp;t=146s\">\u25b6 2:26<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Rhodopes, between Smolyan and Devin \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> on the road below Pamporovo \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfdb<\/strong> folk music school and Rhodope architecture<\/p>\n<p>This is the home of Rhodope music. The national school of folk arts is here, and on any ordinary day you may hear a kaba gaida \u2014 the deep-toned Rhodope bagpipe \u2014 being practised somewhere behind a wall. The houses are tall and white, with small windows and high stone yard walls that give the village its closed, fortress-like look.<\/p>\n<p>The Church of the Assumption was built in 1834 and, by local tradition, raised in an extraordinarily short time. On the first Sunday of March the village holds its kukeri festival, when masked figures fill the street \u2014 the best day of the year to be here, and the busiest.<\/p>\n<h3>#4 \u2014 Trigrad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xCQE5t2KWts&amp;t=163s\">\u25b6 2:43<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Rhodopes, Devin municipality \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> through the Trigrad gorge \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfdb<\/strong> the Devil\u2019s Throat cave and the gorge<\/p>\n<p>The road to Trigrad runs through a gorge with vertical walls hundreds of metres high, and that drive is half the visit. At the narrowest point is the Devil\u2019s Throat, a cave where the whole Trigradska river falls underground into an enormous chamber and disappears.<\/p>\n<p>What makes it famous is the detail that objects thrown into the water have never been found where the river re-emerges. The legend attached to it is that this is where Orpheus descended to the underworld. You exit up a tunnel of some three hundred steps, which is the part nobody warns you about. Yagodina cave is nearby, and the gorge is a well-known spot for watching wallcreepers.<\/p>\n<h3>#3 \u2014 Pliska <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xCQE5t2KWts&amp;t=183s\">\u25b6 3:03<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Shumen province, northeastern Bulgaria \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> off the Shumen\u2013Varna road \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfdb<\/strong> the first Bulgarian capital, 681\u2013893<\/p>\n<p>Pliska was the capital of the Bulgarian state for over two centuries, and the scale of what has been excavated is what surprises people: stone fortress walls, the palace complex, a bathhouse and the Great Basilica, which was one of the largest churches in Europe when it was built.<\/p>\n<p>It is an open field of foundations rather than standing buildings, so it rewards a guide or a good plan of the site. Combine it with the Madara Rider, the UNESCO rock relief carved into a cliff twenty kilometres away, and with Preslav, the second capital, to see the whole sequence in one day.<\/p>\n<h3>#2 \u2014 Sveshtari <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xCQE5t2KWts&amp;t=202s\">\u25b6 3:22<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Razgrad province, Sboryanovo reserve \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> from Isperih, short drive \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfdb<\/strong> UNESCO Thracian tomb, 3rd century BC<\/p>\n<p>The Sveshtari tomb is unlike anything else in Thracian archaeology. Its burial chamber is lined with ten sculpted female figures \u2014 caryatids carved in high relief from the wall itself, arms raised as if holding up the ceiling \u2014 and no comparable arrangement has been found anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p>The tomb belonged to a Getic ruler and stands within the Sboryanovo reserve, a landscape of dozens of burial mounds and a sanctuary. Also inside the reserve is Demir Baba Teke, a shrine venerated by both Muslims and Christians, which is a short walk through the woods.<\/p>\n<h3>#1 \u2014 Arbanasi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xCQE5t2KWts&amp;t=226s\">\u25b6 3:46<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> on the plateau above Veliko Tarnovo \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude97<\/strong> ten minutes from the city \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfdb<\/strong> fortified merchant houses and frescoed churches<\/p>\n<p>Arbanasi was a wealthy village of merchants trading across the Ottoman Empire, and its houses were built accordingly \u2014 high blank stone walls, heavy gates and iron-barred windows, closer to small fortresses than to farmhouses. The Konstantsalieva House is open and shows how they lived inside those walls.<\/p>\n<p>The real surprise is the Nativity Church. From outside it looks like a low stone barn, because churches were not permitted to stand out; inside, every surface is covered with 17th-century frescoes running to thousands of figures. Veliko Tarnovo and Tsarevets are ten minutes away, which makes Arbanasi the obvious place to sleep.
