It has beaches and a long park, but also cave monasteries, Roman ruins and a palace surrounded by gardens. This guide brings together five places that reveal different sides of the city. Choose one historical stop, one walk and one stretch of sea, and the day already has a good shape. Caves here were in use from the early Christian centuries, and the monastery had its most active period in the 12th to 14th centuries, when hermit monks of the hesychast tradition lived in the rock.<\/p>\n<p>The name comes from the Turkish word for \u201ccolourful\u201d, a reference to the painting that once covered the walls \u2014 fragments of it survive in the chapel. There is a small museum at the entrance and a second cave complex, the catacombs, a few minutes\u2019 walk away. In summer the site runs an evening sound-and-light programme.<\/p>\n<h3>#4 \u2014 Euxinograd <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gY5zpe_GCaU&amp;t=81s\">\u25b6 1:21<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> coast road north of Varna \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> park visits only, check access in advance \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> two hours<\/p>\n<p>Euxinograd was built in the 1880s as the summer residence of the Bulgarian monarchs, in the style of a French ch\u00e2teau, and its park was laid out by French landscape gardeners with species brought in from across the Mediterranean. The estate has its own winery, which still produces wine and rakia on site.<\/p>\n<p>Be aware of what you are booking: this remains an official state residence, so the palace interior is generally closed and the park is open to visitors only under certain arrangements. Check the current rules before driving out \u2014 turning up unannounced usually means seeing the gate.<\/p>\n<h3>#3 \u2014 Varna Dolphinarium <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gY5zpe_GCaU&amp;t=125s\">\u25b6 2:05<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> inside the Sea Garden \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> ticketed, fixed show times \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> 40 minutes<\/p>\n<p>Opened in the 1980s and still the only dolphinarium in the country, this is a long-standing family fixture in Varna, with several bottlenose dolphin shows a day in a covered pool. Tickets sell out in high season, so book rather than arrive hopeful.<\/p>\n<p>It is worth knowing that performances involving captive dolphins are criticised by animal-welfare organisations, and opinions on this kind of attraction differ sharply. That is a decision for each visitor; the practical point is that the venue sits inside the Sea Garden and combines easily with everything else there.<\/p>\n<h3>#2 \u2014 Roman Baths <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gY5zpe_GCaU&amp;t=161s\">\u25b6 2:41<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> old town, near the port \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> ticketed \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> 45 minutes<\/p>\n<p>These are the thermae of Roman Odessos, built in the 2nd century AD and the largest surviving Roman public building in Bulgaria \u2014 among the biggest Roman baths anywhere in Europe. Walls still stand several metres high, and you can follow the sequence of rooms from the cold hall through to the hot one, with the brick pillars of the underfloor heating exposed.<\/p>\n<p>For the coins, ceramics and jewellery, the place to go is the Archaeological Museum a few streets away \u2014 a separate institution, and an essential one. It holds the Varna gold treasure, the oldest processed gold ever found, buried in a necropolis here more than six thousand years ago.<\/p>\n<h3>#1 \u2014 Sea Garden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gY5zpe_GCaU&amp;t=202s\">\u25b6 3:22<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> along the seafront, from the centre northwards \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> free; attractions inside ticketed \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> half a day<\/p>\n<p>The Sea Garden was begun in the 1880s and shaped over decades by the Czech gardener Anton Novak, which is why it feels planned rather than grown: long avenues, terraces stepping down towards the beach and formal planting under old trees. It is usually described as the largest landscaped park on the Balkan peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>Inside it are the zoo, the aquarium, the naval museum, the observatory and planetarium, and the Dolphinarium, along with caf\u00e9s and viewpoints over the bay.
