Bulgaria is wonderfully rich in these places, from the Rhodope Mountains to Rila and the Balkan range. Here are <strong>10 resorts with natural hot springs<\/strong> to keep in mind when you need rest, fresh air, or simply a change of pace.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some are surrounded by forests. Others make a good base for hiking, sightseeing, or exploring nearby caves and waterfalls. And yes, some are perfect for doing absolutely nothing. That is a valid holiday plan. The town sits where the Mediterranean climate pushes up the Struma valley, giving it exceptionally mild winters, and it has been used for decades as a treatment centre for asthma and other respiratory conditions \u2014 people are referred here rather than choosing it at random.<\/p>\n<p>The park in the middle of town is one of the largest in Bulgaria and is the main pleasure of staying here. Melnik, with its sand pyramids and wine cellars, and Rozhen Monastery are both a short drive away, which makes Sandanski a comfortable base rather than a place you never leave.<\/p>\n<h3>#9 \u2014 Momin Prohod <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RljqX8QRXLY&amp;t=49s\">\u25b6 0:49<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> part of Kostenets, at the northern foot of Rila \u00b7 <strong>\u2668\ufe0f<\/strong> radon-bearing thermal water \u00b7 <strong>\ud83e\udd7e<\/strong> Kostenets waterfall, the Rila foothills<\/p>\n<p>Correcting a common description: Momin Prohod is not in the Balkan range but at the northern foot of Rila, in the Kostenets valley on the Sofia\u2013Plovdiv line. That location matters, because it is easy to reach by train from either city.<\/p>\n<p>The water contains radon and the resort has long been used for treatment of nervous-system and locomotor conditions, with a large sanatorium at its centre. The Kostenets waterfall, a short walk up the valley, is the standard outing, and Rila Monastery is within a day\u2019s drive.<\/p>\n<h3>#8 \u2014 Haskovo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RljqX8QRXLY&amp;t=70s\">\u25b6 1:10<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Thracian plain, above the Eastern Rhodopes \u00b7 <strong>\u2668\ufe0f<\/strong> the springs are at Haskovski Mineralni Bani, outside the town \u00b7 <strong>\ud83e\udd7e<\/strong> Eastern Rhodopes, Alexandrovo Thracian tomb<\/p>\n<p>Another correction worth making: Haskovo is not in Sredna Gora. It stands on the edge of the Thracian plain where the Eastern Rhodopes begin, and the hot springs are not in the city itself but at Haskovski Mineralni Bani, roughly twenty kilometres away, where the hotels and treatment centres are.<\/p>\n<p>The city is worth an hour for the enormous statue of the Virgin and Child on the hill above it, visible from most of the surrounding plain. The Eastern Rhodopes beyond are the least visited part of the country \u2014 vultures, rock formations and the Alexandrovo Thracian tomb with its hunting frescoes.<\/p>\n<h3>#7 \u2014 Krasnovo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RljqX8QRXLY&amp;t=89s\">\u25b6 1:29<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> southern foot of Sredna Gora, near Hisarya \u00b7 <strong>\u2668\ufe0f<\/strong> small mineral baths, quiet village setting \u00b7 <strong>\ud83e\udd7e<\/strong> Hisarya, the Starosel Thracian complex<\/p>\n<p>Krasnovo is a village rather than a resort, on the southern slopes of Sredna Gora \u2014 not, as sometimes written, in the central Balkan range. Its mineral baths are modest and local, which is precisely the appeal for anyone who finds the larger spa towns too organised.<\/p>\n<p>What makes the area worth a weekend is what surrounds it. Hisarya, with its Roman walls and its own famous mineral water, is close by, and the Thracian temple complex at Starosel is a short drive through the hills \u2014 two very different reasons to be in this corner of the country.<\/p>\n<h3>#6 \u2014 Varshets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RljqX8QRXLY&amp;t=110s\">\u25b6 1:50<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> northern foot of the Western Balkan range, near Montana \u00b7 <strong>\u2668\ufe0f<\/strong> warm, very lightly mineralised water \u00b7 <strong>\ud83e\udd7e<\/strong> the Sun Garden park, Klisura Monastery<\/p>\n<p>Varshets is one of the oldest spa towns in Bulgaria and looks it, with a spa hall and colonnades from the interwar years when it was a fashionable destination. The water is warm and unusually soft, low in dissolved minerals, which is why it is drunk as well as bathed in.<\/p>\n<p>Its Sun Garden is among the largest landscaped parks in the country and does most of the work of a visit \u2014 long avenues, a lake, and paths continuing into the forest. The Balkan range immediately behind gives easy walking, and Klisura Monastery is nearby.<\/p>\n<h3>#5 \u2014 Pavel Banya <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RljqX8QRXLY&amp;t=126s\">\u25b6 2:06<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> the Rose Valley, below the Balkan range \u00b7 <strong>\u2668\ufe0f<\/strong> hot springs, serious rehabilitation programmes \u00b7 <strong>\ud83e\udd7e<\/strong> Kazanlak, the Thracian tombs, the rose fields<\/p>\n<p>Pavel Banya is one of Bulgaria\u2019s main rehabilitation centres, specialising in recovery from orthopaedic surgery and in locomotor and neurological conditions. Come knowing that: the hotels are built around treatment rather than around leisure, and the results are the reason people return.<\/p>\n<p>The location is a bonus. The town sits in the Rose Valley, so a late-May or early-June visit coincides with the harvest and the fields are in bloom. Kazanlak, its Thracian tomb and the Valley of the Thracian Kings are all within half an hour.<\/p>\n<h3>#4 \u2014 Belchin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RljqX8QRXLY&amp;t=154s\">\u25b6 2:34<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Palakaria valley, between Rila, Verila and Plana \u00b7 <strong>\u2668\ufe0f<\/strong> thermal springs, modern spa complex \u00b7 <strong>\ud83e\udd7e<\/strong> Tsari Mali Grad fortress, Samokov, Borovets<\/p>\n<p>Belchin is close enough to Sofia for a weekend and quiet enough not to feel like an extension of it. The village sits in the Palakaria valley below Rila, and its spa complex is among the newer ones in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The thing that makes the trip is on the hill above: Tsari Mali Grad, a late-antique and medieval fortress excavated and partly rebuilt, with a chapel at the top and a view over the whole valley. Borovets and Samokov are twenty minutes away, so this works as a base in winter too.<\/p>\n<h3>#3 \u2014 Starozagorski Mineralni Bani <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RljqX8QRXLY&amp;t=174s\">\u25b6 2:54<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> southern Sredna Gora, near Stara Zagora \u00b7 <strong>\u2668\ufe0f<\/strong> hot springs used since antiquity \u00b7 <strong>\ud83e\udd7e<\/strong> Stara Zagora, the Neolithic dwellings museum<\/p>\n<p>People have been bathing here since Roman times, and the remains of the ancient bath complex are still on the site \u2014 a rare case where you can see the continuity rather than just be told about it. The water is hot and has been used for digestive and locomotor treatment for generations.<\/p>\n<p>It sits in the wooded southern edge of Sredna Gora, about a quarter of an hour from Stara Zagora, which makes the city\u2019s Neolithic dwellings museum and its Roman street mosaic easy to add. A good option when you want the water without committing to a whole week of it.<\/p>\n<h3>#2 \u2014 Sapareva Banya <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RljqX8QRXLY&amp;t=192s\">\u25b6 3:12<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> at the foot of Rila, near Dupnitsa \u00b7 <strong>\u2668\ufe0f<\/strong> the hottest mineral water on the continent, around 103\u00b0C \u00b7 <strong>\ud83e\udd7e<\/strong> the Seven Rila Lakes via Panichishte<\/p>\n<p>Sapareva Banya has the headline: a geyser in the middle of town, the only one of its kind in continental Europe, which sends a column of boiling water and steam into the air from a borehole. At roughly 103\u00b0C the source is the hottest mineral water on the continent \u2014 which means every pool in town is fed by cooled water, and the geyser itself is watched, not entered.<\/p>\n<p>It is also the gateway to the Seven Rila Lakes: the road climbs to Panichishte, a chairlift takes you most of the way up, and the circuit of the lakes is one of the best day walks in the country. Its spa hotels are among the better-equipped in the country, and the mountain air is part of the treatment.<\/p>\n<p>What puts it at the top of this list is the surroundings. The Struilitsa eco-trail starts at the edge of town and follows the river through a gorge; the Trigrad gorge and the Devil\u2019s Throat cave are half an hour away, with Yagodina cave beyond.
