Tours go inside; the visit is more interesting if you know that.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of Bucharest is far more likeable. Lipscani, the old merchant quarter, is now the centre of the city\u2019s nightlife; the Village Museum on the lakeshore is an open-air collection of real houses moved here from across the country; and the boulevards of the interwar years are why the city was once called the Paris of the East.<\/p>\n<h3>#9 \u2014 Warsaw, Poland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D-nG6RHAiHE&amp;t=97s\">\u25b6 1:37<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> central Poland, on the Vistula \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude87<\/strong> Chopin airport to centre by train, 20 minutes \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udc65<\/strong> serious, modern, moving<\/p>\n<p>Warsaw\u2019s Old Town is on the UNESCO list not despite being a reconstruction but because of it: the city was systematically destroyed in 1944 and the quarter was rebuilt from paintings, photographs and memory. Knowing that changes how the square looks.<\/p>\n<p>Two museums are essential and neither is easy. The Warsaw Rising Museum tells the story of the 1944 uprising, and POLIN, the museum of the history of Polish Jews, covers a thousand years of a community that was almost entirely destroyed here. Between them, walk in \u0141azienki Park, where free Chopin concerts run beside the lake on summer Sundays.<\/p>\n<h3>#8 \u2014 Budapest, Hungary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D-nG6RHAiHE&amp;t=142s\">\u25b6 2:22<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> on the Danube, hilly Buda and flat Pest \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude87<\/strong> airport bus 100E to the centre, about 40 minutes \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udc65<\/strong> spectacular and good value<\/p>\n<p>Buda and Pest were separate cities until 1873, and the split still shapes a visit: the castle, Fisherman\u2019s Bastion and the views are on the Buda side, while the Parliament, the boulevards, the restaurants and the nightlife are in Pest.<\/p>\n<p>The thermal baths are the thing you should not skip \u2014 Sz\u00e9chenyi in its yellow neo-baroque courtyard, Gell\u00e9rt for the art nouveau tiling, Rudas for the surviving Ottoman dome. The ruin bars of District VII, set up in abandoned buildings, are the modern counterweight, and dinner is still cheaper than in most western capitals.<\/p>\n<h3>#7 \u2014 Lisbon, Portugal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D-nG6RHAiHE&amp;t=190s\">\u25b6 3:10<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Atlantic coast, on the Tagus estuary \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude87<\/strong> metro red line from the airport, 20 minutes \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udc65<\/strong> hilly, sunny, increasingly busy<\/p>\n<p>The 1755 earthquake and the tsunami and fire that followed destroyed most of Lisbon, which is why the Baixa is a rational grid of matching fa\u00e7ades \u2014 one of Europe\u2019s first planned reconstructions \u2014 while Alfama, which survived, is a maze of lanes going nowhere in particular.<\/p>\n<p>Bel\u00e9m, downriver, has the tower and the Jer\u00f3nimos Monastery, both UNESCO sites, and the original past\u00e9is de Bel\u00e9m. Tram 28 crosses the best of the old city and is also where every pickpocket in Lisbon works, so keep your bag in front of you. Evenings belong to Bairro Alto or to a fado house in Alfama.<\/p>\n<h3>#6 \u2014 Sofia, Bulgaria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D-nG6RHAiHE&amp;t=235s\">\u25b6 3:55<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> western Bulgaria, under Vitosha mountain \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude87<\/strong> metro direct from the airport terminal, 20 minutes \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udc65<\/strong> cheap, compact, easy<\/p>\n<p>Sofia is one of very few European capitals where the metro runs straight from the airport terminal into the centre, and one of even fewer where a 2,290-metre mountain sits inside the city limits. That combination \u2014 landing, dropping bags, and being on a hiking trail within the hour \u2014 is its real distinction.<\/p>\n<p>In the centre, the excavated streets of Roman Serdica run through and under the metro station, the gold-domed Alexander Nevsky cathedral is a few minutes away, and within a couple of hundred metres of each other stand an Orthodox church, a mosque, a synagogue and a Catholic cathedral \u2014 a corner locals call the Square of Tolerance.<\/p>\n<h3>#5 \u2014 Amsterdam, Netherlands <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D-nG6RHAiHE&amp;t=281s\">\u25b6 4:41<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> North Holland, on the canal ring \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude87<\/strong> train from Schiphol, 15 minutes \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udc65<\/strong> beautiful, expensive, tightly managed<\/p>\n<p>The 17th-century canal ring is a UNESCO site and the reason the city looks the way it does \u2014 a deliberate piece of urban planning from the Dutch Golden Age rather than a picturesque accident.<\/p>\n<p>Book the Anne Frank House the moment tickets are released; it sells out weeks ahead and there is no queue to join on the day. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum need advance slots too. And take the bike lanes seriously: they are a road, not a pavement, and standing in one is the fastest way to be shouted at in Dutch.<\/p>\n<h3>#4 \u2014 Vienna, Austria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D-nG6RHAiHE&amp;t=326s\">\u25b6 5:26<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> eastern Austria, on the Danube \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude87<\/strong> S-Bahn or CAT from the airport, 16\u201325 minutes \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udc65<\/strong> imperial, orderly, quietly enjoyable<\/p>\n<p>Sch\u00f6nbrunn, the Hofburg and St Stephen\u2019s cover the Habsburg city, and the museums along the Ring \u2014 the Kunsthistorisches above all \u2014 hold collections that few cities can match. The Naschmarkt is the place to eat between them.<\/p>\n<p>Two things visitors miss. Standing tickets at the State Opera cost a few euros and go on sale shortly before each performance \u2014 the cheapest world-class opera in Europe. And the Viennese coffee house is on the UNESCO list of intangible heritage, which is a formal way of saying that sitting for three hours over one melange and a newspaper is not just tolerated but expected.<\/p>\n<h3>#3 \u2014 Berlin, Germany <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D-nG6RHAiHE&amp;t=370s\">\u25b6 6:10<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> northeastern Germany, on the Spree \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude87<\/strong> train from BER, about 30 minutes \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udc65<\/strong> vast, informal, endlessly varied<\/p>\n<p>Berlin is much bigger and more spread out than most first-time visitors expect, so plan by district and use the S- and U-Bahn rather than trying to walk between sights. Museum Island, with five museums including the Pergamon, is a UNESCO site and a full day on its own.<\/p>\n<p>For the Wall, the East Side Gallery is the painted stretch everyone photographs, but the memorial at Bernauer Stra\u00dfe is the one that actually explains how the border worked, with a preserved section of the full death strip. After dark the city does what it is famous for, and the clubs are as selective as their reputation suggests.<\/p>\n<h3>#2 \u2014 Athens, Greece <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D-nG6RHAiHE&amp;t=413s\">\u25b6 6:53<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Attica, with the Acropolis at its centre \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude87<\/strong> metro line 3 from the airport, about 40 minutes \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udc65<\/strong> ancient and very much alive<\/p>\n<p>The Acropolis is the reason people come, and the practical advice matters: go at opening time or in the last two hours, because there is no shade on the rock and the site can close during midday heat in summer. The Acropolis Museum below explains what you have just walked over far better than any sign on the site.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond it, the Ancient Agora, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the lanes of Plaka and Anafiotika fill a second day. Even the metro is archaeological \u2014 several stations display the finds uncovered while they were being dug.<\/p>\n<h3>#1 \u2014 Madrid, Spain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D-nG6RHAiHE&amp;t=463s\">\u25b6 7:43<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> the centre of Spain, on a high plateau \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\ude87<\/strong> metro line 8 from Barajas, about 30 minutes \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udc65<\/strong> late nights, great museums, real city<\/p>\n<p>Madrid\u2019s Golden Triangle of art \u2014 the Prado, the Reina Sof\u00eda with Picasso\u2019s <em>Guernica<\/em>, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza \u2014 stands within a few hundred metres, and the first two both open their doors free of charge for the last hours of the day. Turn up early for that queue. The Paseo del Prado and the Retiro park were added to the UNESCO list in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Eat where Madrid eats: the Mercado de San Miguel is beautiful and priced for visitors, while the bars around La Latina and Lavapi\u00e9s do the same thing better and cheaper. Flamenco is Andalusian by origin, but Madrid\u2019s tablaos are among the best places to see it performed seriously.
