They sit on cliffs, above rivers and beside roads that once mattered enormously. These five castles and fortresses offer a direct way into the country\u2019s medieval past. A fortress makes more sense when you see the landscape it was built to protect. Most of the walls are ruined, but one building survives almost intact: the two-storey Church of the Holy Mother of God, one of the best-preserved pieces of medieval church architecture in Bulgaria.<\/p>\n<p>An inscription carved into the rock records that Tsar Ivan Asen II rebuilt the fortress in 1231, after his victory at Klokotnitsa. The walk up from the road takes about fifteen minutes and is steeper than it looks. Bachkovo Monastery is a few kilometres further along the same valley, so the two go together naturally.<\/p>\n<h3>#4 \u2014 Kaliakra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7PAmGRHgYvc&amp;t=81s\">\u25b6 1:21<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Dobrich province, northern Black Sea coast \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfdb<\/strong> Thracian to medieval, peak in the 14th century \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> ticketed, open-air site<\/p>\n<p>Kaliakra is a narrow cape of red-brown rock running two kilometres out into the sea, with cliffs dropping straight into deep water. It was fortified from Thracian times onward and reached its height in the 14th century as the seat of Despot Dobrotitsa, who ruled the Dobrudzha coast almost independently.<\/p>\n<p>The legend attached to it \u2014 forty maidens who braided their hair together and threw themselves from the cliff rather than be taken \u2014 is remembered by a monument at the entrance. Off the cape in 1791 the Russian admiral Ushakov defeated the Ottoman fleet in one of the decisive naval battles of the age. There is a small museum inside a cave in the rock, and the reserve around it is one of the best places on the coast to see dolphins and migrating birds.<\/p>\n<h3>#3 \u2014 Hisarya Fortress, Lovech <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7PAmGRHgYvc&amp;t=111s\">\u25b6 1:51<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> on the hill above Lovech \u2014 not the spa town of the same name \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfdb<\/strong> Roman, Byzantine, Second Bulgarian Empire \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> free to walk the site<\/p>\n<p>First, a name to keep straight: this Hisarya is the fortress hill above Lovech in northern Bulgaria, and has nothing to do with the spa town of Hisarya in Plovdiv province. Both names simply come from the Turkish word for fortress.<\/p>\n<p>Its importance is a single event. In 1187 the peace of Lovech was signed here between the Asen brothers and Byzantium, effectively recognising the restored Bulgarian state \u2014 the founding document of the Second Bulgarian Empire. What remains today is walls, gates and a superb view over the meander of the Osam. Below the hill lies the Varosha old quarter and the covered bridge, the only one of its kind in the country.<\/p>\n<h3>#2 \u2014 Baba Vida <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7PAmGRHgYvc&amp;t=148s\">\u25b6 2:28<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Vidin, on the bank of the Danube \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfdb<\/strong> Roman foundations, medieval castle \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> ticketed<\/p>\n<p>Baba Vida is the only medieval castle in Bulgaria that survives as a complete building rather than as ruins \u2014 you walk through gates, along walls and up into towers that are still standing to their full height. It was raised on the foundations of the Roman fortress of Bononia, which guarded this crossing of the Danube.<\/p>\n<p>Vidin was the last Bulgarian stronghold to hold out against the Ottomans, and the castle later served as a garrison, an arsenal and a prison; the cells are part of the visit. Today the courtyard is used as an open-air theatre stage, and the castle has appeared in a number of films. It is the most complete medieval experience on this list.<\/p>\n<h3>#1 \u2014 Tsarevets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7PAmGRHgYvc&amp;t=183s\">\u25b6 3:03<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Veliko Tarnovo, above the Yantra \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udfdb<\/strong> capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, 1185\u20131393 \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> ticketed, evening show on set dates<\/p>\n<p>Tsarevets was not a castle but a fortified city: the royal palace, the patriarchal cathedral, churches, workshops and hundreds of houses stood on this hill inside a bend of the Yantra. It fell to the Ottomans in 1393 after a three-month siege, and that date ends medieval Bulgaria.<\/p>\n<p>Walk the whole circuit rather than just the main path. Baldwin\u2019s Tower at the southern end is named after the Latin emperor held prisoner in Tarnovo; Execution Rock, on the northern spur, is where traitors were thrown into the river. The rebuilt cathedral at the summit is painted not with icons but with stark modernist murals from the 1980s that still divide opinion.
