Patriarch Evtimiy, who led the city&#8217;s defence in the absence of Tsar Ivan Shishman, was reportedly spared execution at the last moment and exiled instead, while much of the population was killed or deported.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly 484 years later, on this same date in 1877, an advance detachment of the Russian army crossed the Balkan Range to liberate the town of Kazanlak during the Russo-Turkish War &#8212; part of the campaign that would finally restore Bulgarian statehood after centuries of foreign rule.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>July 17, 1998 &#8212; Joining Central European Free Trade<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>More than a century after liberation, Bulgaria signed the Central European Free Trade Agreement, becoming its seventh member state alongside Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, and Romania.
