{"id":903,"date":"2010-01-01T07:20:00","date_gmt":"2010-01-01T05:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bronicable.com\/en\/uncategorized\/on-this-day-in-bulgaria-july-20\/"},"modified":"2026-07-23T13:21:59","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T11:21:59","slug":"on-this-day-in-bulgaria-july-20","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bronicable.com\/en\/on-this-day-in-bulgaria\/on-this-day-in-bulgaria-july-20\/","title":{"rendered":"On This Day in Bulgaria: July 20"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Separated by more than a thousand years, two events on July 20 each reshaped the political landscape of their era &#8212; both on Bulgarian soil, both carrying consequences far beyond their moment.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>July 20, 792 &#8212; Khan Kardam Routs the Byzantines at Marcellae<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Khan Kardam of the First Bulgarian Empire confronted Byzantine Emperor Constantine VI near the border fortress of Marcellae, in what is now southeastern Bulgaria. Kardam had fortified the roads leading to the Rish Pass and the Bulgarian capital, Pliska, and simply waited. After days of hesitation, Constantine VI &#8212; reportedly encouraged by court astrologers who promised victory &#8212; finally attacked the entrenched Bulgarian positions.<\/p>\n<p>The assault collapsed in the rugged terrain, and the Byzantine army was routed and driven all the way back to Constantinople, forcing Constantine to resume paying annual tribute to Bulgaria.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>July 20, 1891 &#8212; Bulgarian Socialism Finds Its Footing at Buzludzha<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>More than a millennium later, on Buzludzha Peak in the Balkan Mountains, a small group of socialists led by Dimitar Blagoev gathered secretly to found the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party, the country&#8217;s first organised Marxist political movement.
