It drew tens of thousands of young delegates from around the globe for a program of politics, culture, and international friendship under the banner of the Soviet-aligned festival movement.<\/p>\n<p>For Bulgaria, hosting carried real prestige. It was a chance to present its capital and its socialist achievements to visitors from dozens of nations, and it placed the country at the centre of a large international event at the height of the Cold War, when such festivals doubled as a form of youth diplomacy.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>July 28, 1973 \u2014 Bulgaria&#8217;s News Agency Gains Standing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA) was elevated to the rank of a committee under the Council of Ministers. The bureaucratic promotion reflected the state&#8217;s growing reliance on BTA as its official channel for domestic and international news.<\/p>\n<p>In the centralized information environment of the time, such status meant an even closer tie between the agency and the highest organs of government. BTA remains Bulgaria&#8217;s national news agency today, tracing its origins to a single bulletin issued in 1898 \u2014 a mark of its continuity across very different
