July 31, 1877 \u2014 A Hard-Fought War<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The town of Stara Zagora, recently liberated by Russian forces, was recaptured and razed by Suleyman Pasha’s troops during the Russo-Turkish War, a reminder of how contested the road to Bulgarian liberation truly was.<\/p>\n

July 31, 1997 \u2014 Adopting the Coat of Arms<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The National Assembly adopted the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Bulgaria Act, formally establishing the country’s modern coat of arms, designed by painter Kiril Gogov and sculptor Georgi Chapkunov.<\/p>\n

July 31, 2014 \u2014 Conquering K2<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Bulgarian mountaineer Boyan Petrov reached the summit of K2 (8,611 m), the world’s second-highest mountain, on the Pakistan-China border, adding another milestone to his celebrated high-altitude climbing career.<\/p>\n
