The image of defenders holding a mountain pass with bare hands became one of the most powerful symbols of the Bulgarian liberation struggle. The Shipka battle entered Bulgarian folklore and school textbooks, shaping national identity for generations.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>August 5, 1956 &#8212; Bulgaria Joins UNESCO<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Bulgaria became a member of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
