Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.

August 16, 1877 — The Pleven Encirclement

Russian and Bulgarian forces continued tightening their siege of Pleven, cutting Ottoman supply routes and preventing reinforcements from reaching Osman Pasha’s garrison. The methodical encirclement reflected lessons learned from costly earlier frontal assaults on the city’s formidable fortifications. Bulgarian militia units played a key role guarding supply lines and conducting reconnaissance across the surrounding countryside.

August 16, 1944 — The War at Bulgaria’s Doorstep

As Soviet forces swept through Romania, German units began withdrawing northward, fundamentally altering the strategic landscape around Bulgaria. Germany’s collapsing Balkan position left Sofia exposed and made the country’s continued Axis alignment indefensible. Events were now moving faster than Bulgarian diplomacy could manage, with the September crisis just weeks away.
