Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.

August 31, 1903 — The Preobrazhenie Uprising Suppressed

Ottoman forces completed the suppression of the Preobrazhenie Uprising in the Adrianople vilayet, driving IMRO fighters into the mountains after weeks of resistance. The twin uprisings of Ilinden and Preobrazhenie — launched across a vast stretch of Ottoman territory in the summer of 1903 — ended in military defeat but transformed the political landscape. They brought the Bulgarian question to the forefront of European diplomacy and made the status quo in the Ottoman Balkans increasingly difficult to sustain.

August 31, 1944 — The Final Days Before the Coup

As August ended, Bulgaria stood at the most critical crossroads in its 20th-century history. Soviet armies were massing on the Danube, Allied bombing had struck its cities and rail lines, Germany was retreating from the Balkans, and the Fatherland Front coalition was preparing to seize power. Within ten days, the September 9 coup would transform the country entirely. The old order had just hours left to run.
